Andrea Radrizzani signing off high-level talks as Leeds one step from £20m+ transfer – report

Leeds United are now one step away from announcing the signing of Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr, according to Tutto Calciomercato 24.

The Italian outlet has reported on its website that Andrea Radrizzani has been signing off high-level negotiations all summer, and is set to do it again.

It is shared that Leeds will pay £21.1million with this potentially their last move of the entire window with three weeks to go until it slams shut.

Sarr made all of the headlines this week after scoring from inside his own half as Watford left West Brom with a 1-1 draw in the Championship.

The Senegalese international may have two relegations to his name now, but he has been the odd shining light for Watford over three years that has brought more pain than success.

Leeds are now established in the Premier League in their third consecutive season, leaving the 24-year-old with a big decision over his future this month.

Sign off.

This potential move has us dreaming of what our attacking line-up could look like, although we still aren’t 100% convinced it could actually be happening.

Reports coming out of Italy and France appear to have guaranteed that this will happen, yet there has been radio silence from England regarding any movement.

Sarr would be an excellent addition, and alongside Luis Sinisterra would make Raphinha a thing of the past after his £50m+ move to Barcelona this summer.

Add Dan James and Jack Harrison and Jesse Marsch will be laughing, but it could mean that no new striker arrives.

The Whites may be happy with Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt, with James, Rodrigo and now Sarr all capable of filling in if needed – and if not, that may be revisited in January.

Either way, this is certainly one to watch and we can’t imagine too many complaints coming from Elland Road if this one really was one step away and on the verge of completion.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites now want to sign this striker with a rival set to kickstart a major £30million+ transfer battle

Leeds United under no financial pressure to complete sale, transfer would be easy to do – report

Leeds United are not under any immediate pressure to sell Mateusz Kilich this summer despite interest, according to The Athletic.

Polish media outlet Meczyki reported on 4 August that the Polish international was keen to leave Elland Road “at all costs” to try and find regular football ahead of the 2022 World Cup in November.

The 32-year-old wants to be on the plane to Qatar and to do so could pursue a return to FC Utrecht to put himself in the eyes of manager Czesław Michniewicz.

Phil Hay from The Athletic claims that a return to Utrecht would be an easy deal to complete for both Leeds United and Klich but the Whites are not under any financial pressure to see him leave.

He came off the bench in the 2-1 win at home to Wolves for new signing Marc Roca but substitute appearances are not enough for him to be satisfied.

Let him go

Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta have to ask themselves whether Klich is going to be a part of their long-term future for the football club and there is surely only one answer given that he is 32 years of age.

This might be his last season where he can compete in the Premier League, even as a substitute and the new recruits of Roca and Tyler Adams have removed any potential starting place for the Pole.

If Utrecht want to come and make an offer the Leeds would be mad not to listen to what they have to say and Klich’s desire to leave Elland Road should be a further nudge to do that.

He may have two years left on his contract but he knows exactly what he wants before the transfer window closes and after he helped the Whites win promotion and then stay in the top flight, they should listen to his wishes.

Archie Gray can provide cover in midfield if necessary as he keeps improving every single day and if the worst were to happen in terms of injuries, Lewis Bate can be recalled from Oxford United.

Leeds weather forecast for Wednesday as temperatures steadily rise

Wednesday will a day of uninterrupted sunshine with no rain expected at all.

The sun should rise fairly early in Leeds and temperatures will begin to climb in two degree increments by the hour. The city should see one its warmest days though the heat will fall just a degree short of being classified as extreme.

Maximum temperatures will be realised by 3pm and continue till 6pm. With fairly high humidity, that afternoon period should be a trial run for coping with the heatwave which is scheduled to start in Leeds on Thursday.

Like most of Yorkshire, the Met Office says, Leeds will have early mist which should clear quickly: “Any early mist or fog clearing quickly to leave another warm and dry day with unbroken sunshine for many. Once again coastal areas feeling somewhat cooler with an onshore breeze. Maximum temperature 30 ?C.”

A health warming has been issued and the heat is expected to continue rising and peak during the weekend. Leeds will have an Amber warning starting from Thursday, so the temperatures on Wednesday could help preparations for another hot spell.

‘I’ve been told…’ – Journalist shares view on Leeds signing Cody Gakpo

Journalist Dean Jones has suggested that Leeds United are more likely to sign a player who can play in a central striking position as opposed to Cody Gakpo.

According to The Mirror (6 August) Leeds have registered an interest in the 23-year-old but he could cost £40million.

The Dutch international can play as a striker, but is predominantly a winger and former Bleacher Report journalist Jones believes Leeds are prioritising an out-and-out central striker.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT on Tuesday, August 9: “I’ve been told to expect that Leeds would sign a player that’s more likely to play through the middle as opposed to out wide.

“So, given that, I wouldn’t really be expecting Gakpo to land.”

Top talent

There can be no doubt that Gakpo is a top talent and it’s no surprise to see the attacker linked with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United this summer.

It feels like a move for the Dutch international should have materialised as an earlier point in the window, with Luis Sinisterra’s arrival potentially the marquee wide man that Jesse Marsch was going to add to his squad this summer.

However, the Colombian’s injury could well mean the Leeds boss delves into the market for another winger and Gakpo is certainly a player that has caught his eye over recent weeks and months.

Although the big transfer fee and potential interest from elsewhere could well prove a stumbling block if Marsch is just looking for another player to cover Sinisterra’s injury.

Furthermore, Jones is right in suggesting that Leeds could well be focussing on a central striker in the final weeks of the window.

Rodrigo and an injury-prone Patrick Bamford are Marsch’s current options, so it would not be a shock to see a younger face come through the door at Elland Road in the coming weeks.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites now have a clear run to sign a £20m-rated left-back as their Premier League rivals have now bowed out of the race.

Southampton selection policy outlined as Leeds United offered transfer opportunity

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been quizzed on Che Adams’ place in his squad amid reports linking the striker with a move to Leeds United this month.

Leeds are known to be on the lookout for a striker to come in and boost Jesse Marsch’s squad for the remainder of 2022/23.

Adams is someone that has been on the radar before, with The Athletic suggesting that Leeds have the opportunity to sign the Scotland international, who Southampton are willing to move on.

Further fuelling that has been Adams’ omission from Hasenhuttl’s first XI of the season, where Joe Aribo started and Stuart Armstrong was used from the bench, despite neither being recognised strikers.

As quoted by Hampshire Live, Hasenhuttl addressed his selection policy.

“I think everybody should step up, because this is not enough what we’re doing so far.

“I think they deserved to play because they had a good pre-season and scored goals. In the end, Arma (Adam Armstrong, who started with Aribo in the defeat to Tottenham) got the chance today to start because he was the most successful striker in pre-season for us. He deserved it I think.”

Adams has scored 20 goals and registered 10 assists across three seasons in the Premier League for the Saints.

Leeds’ interest has been noted this summer, although it’s also been outlined on The Athletic how the 26-year-old isn’t a priority.

Should Leeds pursue a deal for Adams?

Yes

No

Once you start piecing everything together, you do feel like there’s an opportunity there for Leeds to get Adams if they want him.

If he’s not getting into a Southampton side that’s been battered 4-1 by Tottenham, when Hasenhuttl can use five subs in 90 minutes, he’s clearly way down the pecking order.

Adams, for what it’s worth, would be someone that Leeds could find a real use for in both a 4-2-3-1 and 4-2-2-2, as the Scot compliments Patrick Bamford well.

Whether Leeds decide to pursue a striker seriously remains to be seen, but there’s a hope amongst fans that they do.

If it is to be Adams, the deal feels there to be done.

Leeds face Adams’ Southampton on Saturday at St Mary’s.

Early Leeds team news v Southampton: Five ruled out, big-name duo return – Injury Expert

Leeds United travel to Southampton on Saturday afternoon looking to make it a perfect two-from-two start to the 2022-23 season at St Mary’s.

Injury Expert Ben Dinnery has shared that Jesse Marsch may need to do it without five of his main men though, with Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas, Luis Sinisterra, Adam Forshaw and Junior Firpo set to miss out.

In better news, Dan James will return from his suspension period with Liam Cooper also set to be available after nursing his Achilles problem through pre-season.

Sharing on his website, Premier Injuries, Dinnery shared timescales for each injured player with Sinisterra and Forshaw the next two to return.

With Chelsea the following week, it looks as though those two will be back training this week with the view to have them both available for that showdown at Elland Road.

Five Out.

Of course, having five senior players ruled out can be seen as a massive blow.

Marsch will likely be thankful that they are only relatively small injuries compared to last season, where players were out for months at a time, even after he arrived.

Firpo, Forshaw, Ayling and Sinisterra will return in weeks, and make the squad full strength – with Dallas not expected to play much of a role this season, as we all knew already.

Our starting XI was very strong against Wolves, but the bench was somewhat lacking in experience outside of Mateusz Klich, so welcoming back up to five options that can all make a difference with have a huge impact on the squad.

Marsch will most likely deploy the same starting XI at Southampton, but with the pace of James and the leadership of Cooper to bring on if needed, the squad is already looking better.

Importance of Leeds United transfer movement highlighted against Wolves despite encouraging signs

Leeds United were without seven first-teamers on Saturday as they took on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road.

Fortunately for the Whites, only Stuart Dallas is expected to be out for longer than a few more weeks. Liam Cooper, Adam Forshaw, Luke Ayling, Junior Firpo and Luis Sinisterra are all very much on the comeback trail and could return before the end of the month, while Dan James is now eligible for action this weekend after completing his Premier League suspension.

All seven of the above names would probably have been involved in some capacity against Wolves if they were available and in their absence Jesse Marsch was forced to name a very young nine-man bench. Mateusz Klich, who changed the game when he stepped onto the field in the second half, was the only player over the age of 21, while Darko Gyabi and Archie Gray have never featured for the first-team in a competitive fixture.

Ex-FIFA Ref: FA must step in after player incident sent crowd wild in Leeds win v Wolves

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Keith Hackett has called for the FA to step in after Hwang-Hee Chan caused mayhem as Leeds United beat Wolves 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The ex-FIFA referee admitted that the attacker tarnished the image of the game as he tried to get Marc Roca sent off by holding his face despite there being limited contact.

It led to carnage in the Elland Road stands and Jesse Marsch was far from happy with what he saw from his former attacker after working together at RB Salzburg.

“On this one, the FA has got to come in on that,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“This tarnishes the image of the game, and no wonder the Leeds United manager went a bit spare, and probably instigated the comments that the Wolves manager referred to.

“He’s trying to get a player sent off, I think the FA should pull him on that.”

Shocker.

This isn’t the first time that a match with Wolves has threatened to boil over both on and off the pitch.

Hwang couldn’t have made it clearer that he was feigning an injury, but the officials still fell for it hook, line and sinker, yet there was no caution for Roca.

If the FA doesn’t start interfering when incidents such as these happen, they are only going to keep on happening and will most likely get worst and more ridiculous.

Unfortunately, it is getting worse in the Premier League and the image it gives off is embarrassing at times.

If change is to happen and the image of the game is to remain strong, the FA simply have to do something quickly, and it will likely start by making an example of one player.

Angus Kinnear details why Leeds United can take positives from missing out on Charles De Ketelaere

Leeds United CEO The Whites wanted to sign the Belgian this summer, but he chose to join AC Milan over Leeds.

Leeds met with De Ketelaere and made an offer for the player, but he made it clear that the only club he wished to sign for was AC Milan. The 21-year-old signed a five-year deal with the Italian giants at the start of August, meaning Leeds will have to pursue other targets.

However, Kinnear believes the fact that Leeds ran AC Milan close in the race for De Ketelaere highlights their ever-growing pull in the transfer market.

Robbie Mustoe: “I think it’s another team that’s going to be fascinating. Losing Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips – I’m afraid Leeds United are a club where their better players will try to move on and that’s the reality now. What’s interesting is where he’s gone for his replacement players.

The newspaper has reported in its print edition [8 August, pg. 61] that only 10,000 away strips have been made available so far, and it is due to stay that way for now after the latest blow.

The Whites are said to be concerned with the World Cup fast approaching, and 300,000 shirts usually being sold, but this hold-up which was first because of COVID, is making things worst.

Writing in his latest Sports Agenda snippet, Mike Keegan shared the latest blow to hit the offices at Elland Road with another unexpected blow.

“The arrival of Leeds United shirts has been delayed after shipping containers on a boat being used to bring them in from South east Asia plunged into the sea,” he wrote.

“Only 10,000 away jerseys have been made available so far. A severe outbreak of COVID in Singapore, where the Adidas kits are manufactured, was responsible for an initial hold-up. But, the accident has caused further delays.”

Crisis.

This is becoming a real issue.

Leeds have already confirmed that the home shirt will not be available to purchase until the end of the month, and now only below one-third of a packed Elland Road can get their hands on the away strip.

Of course, the club cannot help the COVID outbreak in Singapore or the shipping containers plunging into the sea, but you would like to have thought there would have been another plan in place.

Now, everyone just has to wait for yet another boat to make the exact same journey which could end up in the same outcome, although everyone will be hoping not.

With the Premier League season here and the World Cup demand surely set to start soon, Leeds will need to get their kits ready and available before September arrives or they could be looking at a very low year in terms of sales, and more importantly income.

Leeds could now launch major Germany raid with attacker transfer on cards – report

Leeds United could return to the Bundesliga to sign another attacker this summer, according to Alex Crook.

The talkSPORT reporter has shared that Victor Orta is possibly on the lookout for another winger, and could look to Germany to solve that issue between now and the deadline.

A new left-back and striker has been mentioned most at Elland Road with Joel Robles set to come in and replace Kiko Casilla this week to solve that problem for Jesse Marsch.

Speaking to Give Me Sport in the past 24 hours, Crook shared the latest he had heard about transfer plans coming from Elland Road for the rest of the month.

“They’ve [Leeds] always been on the lookout for another winger, again I don’t necessarily have an extensive list of names.

“I think my guess would be that it would probably be somebody from the Bundesliga, that Jesse Marsch knows from that division, so I think there’s still a possibility of a couple of arrivals.”

Money.

It looks as though money has been made available for Orta and Marsch, with Andrea Radrizzani looking to build a much more well-rounded squad.

Going to the Bundesliga again would make sense with the American having worked there before his move to Elland Road, and Tyler Adams has already made that switch too.

Looking at the names that have been linked with a move to West Yorkshire though, and none of the wingers have come from Germany, with other areas of the squad surely bigger priorities right now.

Luis Sinisterra is on the verge of returning from his injury and could even be available for the trip to Southampton, so that would help dramatically with options off the bench, with Crysencio Summerville also set for more game time.

Leeds are always ready to pounce on a transfer if it appears from nowhere, but unless that happens, expect just a new striker and left-back to follow Robles to Elland Road.

The motorbike is thought to have been travelling onto Kentmere Avenue from the direction of South Parkway when it hit the van.

Two men riding on the motorbike both suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Police shut Kentmere Avenue and Brooklands Avenue to allow for investigations to take place. The closures have since been lifted.

Leeds United have already punctured last season’s first big problem as transfer double-take emerges

What a difference one year makes

Twelve months ago, Leeds United were licking their wounds after a second consecutive pasting at Old Trafford. It was not the manner in which a Whites side, which ended 2020/21 in top-four form, wanted to start a campaign with.

The opposition and location on that opening day in 2021 masked the problems which would ultimately come out over the following six months for Marsch respects Klich’s honesty in always speaking his mind, but that has meant disagreements have been had behind closed doors.

Losing Klich from a fully-fit Leeds squad would be a fairly amenable outcome for most, but when you have seven players absent and Klich standing head and shoulders above the rest of the bench in experience, it does pose a dilemma for the club.

Wolves spats continue

Diving, time-wasting and feigned injuries happen across the football spectrum, but it always just seems to be that much worse with <a href="https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/all-about/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc" target="_self" rel="Follow" data-link-tracking="InArticle

‘We’d have been up in arms’ – Collymore in bizarre reaction after what Leeds boss Marsch said

Stan Collymore doesn’t think it was as fun as people make out for Leeds United manager J’We’d have been up in arms’ – Collymore in bizarre reaction after what Leeds boss Marsch saidesse Marsch to be invited to the set of Ted Lasso in London.

Marsch has regularly been compared to the fictional American football manager and he told ESPN ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Wolves that he’d been asked to watch the filming of the series amid comparisons.

However, Collymore feels that it’s dangerous to tick boxes in the way it has been for Marsch.

Writing for the Sunday People on 7 August (page 59), Collymore said: “The first thing you think when you hear Jesse Marsch was invited to the Ted Lasso set when they were filming in London is, ‘Well, he’s American, white and a football coach, it’s all just a bit of fun…’

“But if Lasso was a pastiche of a black, female or Muslim character and they’d invited someone to the set because they ticked the same boxes, we’d have been up in arms, so therefore we need to tread lightly when comparing the Leeds boss to Jason Sudeikis’ alter ego.”

Oh come on

This is all ifs and buts to make something that’s a bit of harmless fun look as though it could be dangerous.

Collymore is trying to make something out of nothing here.

There were no black managers, female managers or Muslim managers compared to TV characters so where Collymore has got that from is bizarre.

Marsch was being compared to Lasso in a demeaning way because it was an attempt to talk down an American showing his face in English football.

But he took the poor attempts at an insult with good humour, which is something that should be applauded really.

Marsch tackling the Ted Lasso insults head-on has kind of quietened them down.

Of course, if things start to go south for Leeds this season then the comparisons may come back because in the first season of Ted Lasso, his team is relegated from the Premier League.

But based on what we saw against Wolves on Saturday (6 August), we might be just fine in the battle against the drop.

In other Leeds United news, a deal for this senior player to quit Elland Road is all but done.

MOT View: Manager admission might give Leeds green light to sign int’l hotshot

Leeds United could have received a boost in their pursuit of Ben Brereton Diaz with Blackburn Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson admitting he won’t stand in the way of the 23-year-old this summer.

The Sun reported on 6 June that Leeds were eyeing a move for the forward who scored 21 Championship goals in the 2021/22 season.

Brereton Diaz has a year left on his current deal and Blackburn manager Dahl Tomasson may have given Leeds a boost by suggesting he won’t stand in the forward’s way should a Premier League club come in for the striker.

As quoted by Lancs Live (4 August), the Blackburn boss said: “I’ve told him that if he goes away, and anything in football is possible, I respect that.

“If a bigger club, at this moment, bigger than the Championship I think it’s understandable the player would have ambition.”

“If you play in a bigger, higher level it’s part of life.”

Leeds are certainly on the lookout for a new striker with Jesse Marsch scouring Europe to identify a new frontman to rival Patrick Bamford in the 2022/23 campaign.

However, the Yorkshire side may be better off looking a little closer to home with Brereton Diaz being a proven Championship striker that could be signed for a cut-price fee.

He is currently entering the final year of his current deal at Ewood Park and Leeds would be foolish not to test the water for the Blackburn man.

As much as the Lancashire side will be eager to keep the forward at the club, they cannot risk losing him for free next summer.

Dahl Tomasson’s comments certainly sound like he is unwilling to lose him for nothing next summer and happy for the 23-year-old to depart Ewood Park this summer for the right offer.

Leeds should certainly be exploring this one further.

In other Leeds United news, this Leeds star has taken Marsch’s decision personally as he looks to quit Elland Road this summer.

Rodrigo starts, Gelhardt benched: The Leeds United XI we expect Jesse Marsch to field v Wolves

The Premier League is back with Leeds United in action this afternoon against Wolves at Elland Road.

Leeds scraped over the line last season in terms of survival, with Jesse Marsch hoping to get his side well clear of any type of trouble in 2022/23.

It all starts for Leeds at Elland Road this afternoon, with Wolves in town.

There should be a spring in the step of Marsch’s side, too, after they emphatically dispatched Cagliari 6-2 in their final pre-season fixture despite a host of injuries.

As you can see by the graphic below, we are expecting Marsch to name the same XI that started last Sunday in this season’s first competitive fixture:

Illan Meslier should start the season in goal, whilst Pascal Struijk has been tasked with covering Leeds at left-back in the absence of Junior Firpo. Diego Llorente and Robin Koch look likely to get the nod at centre-back with Liam Cooper out, whilst Rasmus Kristensen starts on the right.

Adam Forshaw is out injured, so the safe money is on Marc Roca and Tyler Adams forming a pivot in midfield.

Ahead of them, there’s goals and plenty of creativity even with Joe Gelhardt held back on the bench.

Rodrigo struck a hat-trick last week, whilst Patrick Bamford notched two goals. Brenden Aaronson was off the mark with three assists, whilst Jack Harrison impressed on the left.

Expect that unit to cause Wolves some problems.

EFL boss coy on pursuit of Leeds United transfer

Russell Martin has remained coy on links suggesting that Swansea City are interested in signing Leeds United wing-back Cody Drameh.

Leeds kick off their Premier League campaign against Wolves at Elland Road, with Drameh looking set to be involved for the Whites with Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas out.

Despite that, Drameh is attracting interest from clubs.

There’s been noted interest from Swansea in the 20-year-old, although their boss, Russell Martin, has remained fairly coy on whether a deal is doable for them – as quoted by the BBC’s Adam Pope.

“Some will be fairly real interest & some will be far out there and nowhere near it. We have lists for everything. We have a list for potential loan signings a list for potential transfer fees if we were to move anyone else on for large sums, hopefully we don’t.

“We have to be prepared for everything. We’re prepared. There’ll be plenty of lists & plenty of names. We just have to wait & see.”

Drameh pushed for a loan move at Leeds last season when chances in the first-team weren’t forthcoming.

Cardiff City was Drameh’s destination, with the right-back making 22 appearances and registering three assists.

Quiz: One question about every Leeds United first-team player – Can you score 100%?

It’s quite a complex situation with Drameh.

Right now, he’s needed at Leeds to cover Rasmus Kristensen and until Ayling is back in action at the end of August, it’s hard to imagine Jesse Marsch will allow Drameh to move.

Beyond that, though, a move does feel a possibility, at least until January when Leeds have a better grip on how their season will unfold.

Swansea, then, might be minded to just keeps tabs on the situation at Elland Road if they really want Drameh.

Does Drameh have a future at Leeds?

Benfica now want to sign £48k-a-week Leeds player, another manager swoops in – report

Benfica wanted to sign Leeds United winger Helder Costa this summer, but Al Ittihad now appear to have won the race for his signature, according to Nawaf Oga.

The Saudi journalist has reported, as shared by Itti Mania, that Nuno Espirito Santo convinced the Angolan international into a reunion after their time together at Wolves.

Costa is said to be moving on an initial loan deal with the option to buy at the end of the current season, as the Whites trim their squad slightly ahead of the new Premier League season.

Writing on their official Twitter account to over 250,000 followers, Itti Mania shared the news that numerous clubs were interested in the winger.

“Helder Costa was coveted by his former club, Benfica,” they wrote.

“But Nuno Santo was able to convince the player to come to the Al Ittihad club.”

Deadwood.

There was excitement around Elland Road when Costa was signed back in the Championship, but unfortunately, for whatever reason, the move never worked out.

Now is the right time to cut ties with the winger, who will join Kiko Casilla as another player on big wages to move away from the club this summer.

Costa is said to be on £48,000-a-week at Leeds (similar to what Casilla was on), and that is money that can be spent elsewhere on someone who could make a difference in the here and now [Super Deportes].

After a disappointing spell at Valencia last season, it was clear that he was never going to turn things around with the Whites, and with Al-Ittihad said to have an option to buy in this deal, it could be the end.

The winger will no doubt thrive in Saudi Arabia under Santo, and we hope he does, but that doesn’t change the fact that now is the right time to cut ties.

Benfica or Al Ittihad, as long as the move happens, all parties should be very happy.

Leeds United’s Michael Skubala hails ‘amazing’ Mateo Joseph following four-goal show at Derby County

Mateo Joseph stole the show for Leeds United under-21s on Friday night as Michael Skubala’s young side started their Premier League 2 campaign with a 5-2 win over Derby County. Joseph scored a first-half hat-trick for the Whites to put the visitors 3-0 up before the 30 minute mark at Pride Park

Fresh from his switch from West Ham United, Sonny Perkins scored Leeds’ fourth of the night with a poacher’s finish from inside the six-yard box, before Joseph bagged the final goal of the match 20 minutes before full-time. It was a performance that not only built on the goal he scored against Blackpool in the first-team last month, but showcased his talent and potential as he made a clear statement of intent.

Perkins, Archie Gray, Jeremiah Mullen and Darko Gyabi were amongst those to impress against the Rams, while Dan James did enough to catch the eye after stepping down from the senior side while suspended. However, it was Joseph who won the most praise from his head coach Skubala after the match.

Read more: Leeds United U21s ratings as Mateo Joseph and Darko Gyabi stand out at Derby County

“He was amazing,” Skubala, who joined Leeds last week, said after watching his side for the first time. “I’ve been here a week and what an athlete Mateo is and what a kid he is, first of all.

“He works hard, his attitude is brilliant and I look at him and think ‘what you could be for a Leeds player’. If I’m watching that as a fan I’m thinking ‘Wow! I want him in the team’. Today I thought he showed his qualities, he absolutely showed his quality, his spinning in behind and getting four goals.

“I thought he was exciting today. We’ve got Sonny who is exciting and he can play as a nine as well, so how do we get Sonny as a nine? We’ve got Sean McGurk, we’ve got Dan James, a really professional performance.

“He’s obviously come in and he’s been great with the group, it’s what you want to see from your pros coming in, he’s been amazing with the group.”

As the scoreline would suggest, the Whites were by far the most dangerous and creative team on the ball, but they looked the part off the ball, too, pressing high up the field and making life difficult for Derby in front of a crowd of over 800. The front four led the press and that set the tone for the Whites to go on and record a comfortable victory to get their Premier League 2 Division 2 campaign on the right track.

“I want us to be aggressive, I want us to be on the front foot and I want us to put teams under a lot of pressure because we can be exciting and we’ve got exciting players,” Skubala added. “If we can get that intensity and intent in our game in our game I think we can be an exciting group.

“At times that looked brilliant. There were times when we have to learn when and where to not do it but there times we were really positive.

“You can probably already see, we’ve worked a lot on pressing from the front in training and you can see the work that’s been done there. Just getting them to understand how I want us to play, be aggressive and at the minute I need to keep driving them and working them to do that well. It was amazing when they got it right, it looked like they couldn’t get out.”

Rodrigo warned he must ‘step up to the mark’ for Leeds United this season

Former Leeds United shot stopper Paul Robinson has told Rodrigo he must step up to the mark for the Whites this season. The Spaniard scored a hat-trick at Elland Road in their penultimate friendly of the summer as Jesse Marsch’s side ran out 6-2 winners against Cagliari.

The 31-year-old was a mainstay of Marcelo Bielsa’s side during the Argentinian’s tenure but he could drop down the pecking order under Marsch after an influx of new players. However, Robinson claims that the club-record signing now needs to step up to the plate following Raphinha’s departure, with concerns around Patrick Bamford’s fitness.

“Rodrigo has got to step up to the mark,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News. “I still think he has unfulfilled potential at Leeds. He’s fallen short.

TAKE PART: Raphinha‘s gone so Leeds need more attacking threat from Rodrigo but now he’s under pressure from the new signings.

“He’s not guaranteed to play every week, he’s got to get himself in the side.”

Phil Hay tips senior man for Leeds exit with Euro club interested – ‘Keep an eye on that one’

Mateusz Klich could be heading towards an exit from Leeds United as he becomes “more and more peripheral”, says Phil Hay.

The Polish international has been a key figure at Elland Road over the last four seasons, and was a major part of the revolution under Marcelo Bielsa that took the club back to the Premier League.

But since the Argentine was sacked and replaced with Jesse Marsch the 32-year-old midfielder has become less important, and now a move is becoming increasingly likely with the Qatar World Cup on the horizon.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show on Friday (5 August, 1.02.00) the Athletic journalist said: “He isn’t at the forefront of the players who are going to start I don’t think at all.

“The World Cup is coming up. He wants to go with Poland. And also he’s at an age where he needs to get as much football as he can.

“There’s a bit of talk in Holland about Utrecht being interested. They’re obviously a club he’s played for before. I would keep an eye on that one.”

On Marsch’s perspective he felt that it was similar to what his Raphinha stance was, suggesting the manager feels: “I don’t want to lose him, but I’m fairly realistic that it might happen.”

He summed up the situation with the view: “Ultimately it does feel like he’s becoming more and more peripheral.”

End of an era

Many will be sad to see him go as Klich is a relatable figure who is popular among the supporters, but if he is no longer set for significant playing time it might be inevitable.

Since the change in manager he is the player who it has been suggested would fall foul of the switch more than any other.

Despite the sale of star teammate Kalvin Phillips it doesn’t look like he is due to be a regular starter, with new signings Tyler Adams and Marc Roca brought in to fill the two deep central roles.

It would probably make sense to keep him as a reliable option off the bench if possible, because Adam Forshaw’s injury luck is in the same bracket as Patrick Bamford’s, unless another new arrival could be found to replace him.

Whether the player would be happy with that however looks doubtful and if specific clubs are now sniffing around it feels like it might only be a matter of time.

If he is going to leave it could well be towards deadline day, if the opening matches of the season look like showing the writing on the wall.

If he doesn’t feature much and a club like FC Utrecht came in for him towards the close of the window it is very believable to think that he would ask to go.

As Hay says, it is one to keep an eye on.

In other Leeds United news, there is misery on the horizon at Elland Road according to one Sky Sports commentator.

Leeds reach official agreement for another new transfer, Victor Orta key – reports

Leeds United have now reached an official agreement to complete the signing of Joel Robles, according to Diario AS over on Twitter.

The Spanish outlet has also reported on its website that Victor Orta and goalkeeping coach Marcos Abad were key to the transfer with the 32-year-old set to arrive as a free agent.

Robles will complete his medical early next week and will arrive to add his experience to the goalkeeping department alongside the likes of Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson.

Writing on their official Twitter account late on Friday evening, AS shared that an agreement had been found in the late hours of the day.

“Leeds reach an agreement with Joel Robles,” they wrote.

“He was without a team and would arrive as a free player, as AS advanced.”

Done.

Orta has got his man, and it looks as though there is only the medical left.

Robles has all but signed on the dotted line and will make the trip across to West Yorkshire over the weekend to make everything official early next week.

It has been reported that his medical will happen at the start of match week two in the Premier League, with things kicking off later today against Wolves.

Orta and Abad have clearly come together to work on this one, identifying the best kind of keeper needed for these younger players who could do with an experienced head around them.

That new player can’t come in and expect to steal the number one shirt off Meslier though, and it looks as though Robles is happy to sign on for that new kind of role.

With an agreement reached, all that is left is the all-important medical and then we should see this one announced and Robles in the squad for the trip to Southampton.

Bring it on.

Pascal Struijk is shouldering the weight of Leeds United’s latest transfer risk

Progress with Junior Firpo’s injury is accelerating and his rapid recovery is narrowing the window Leeds United must make do without him. The stop-gap, the man who has to make all of this work in the meantime is Pascal Struijk.

The Firpo does not miss another match after his return from this injury and goes on to hit performance levels few could have anticipated, the one problem remains the current pocket of time. Struijk is the man this initial risk is resting on in an area of the field where Marsch’s tactics demand control down the full length of the pitch.

And if we revert to the real world where Firpo could well miss at least the odd game here and there, Struijk again becomes the nominated stand-in. <a href="https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/all-about/jesse-marsch" rel="Follow" target="_self" data-link-tracking="InArticle

Big-money Leeds player welcomed to new team as loan-to-buy deal on verge – report

Leeds United winger Helder Costa has been welcomed to Al-Ittihad as a loan-to-buy deal is now on the verge of being completed this month.

Itti Mania, the place to be for all Al-Ittihad news with over 270,000 followers on Twitter have introduced the Angolan international as a new Tiger.

Costa was brought to Elland Road for £16million, but will now leave for Saudi Arabia on an initial loan deal before the summer window slams shut at the end of the month.

Writing on their official Twitter account, as relayed by Graham Smyth, Itti Mania reported that the Saudi Arabian club will have an option, not an obligation to buy Costa.

“Angolan Helder Costa is on loan for Al Ittihad for a season, with the option to buy the contract coming from Leeds,” they wrote.

“Welcome, Helder Costa.”

New Tiger?

Smyth resharing the news shows that this is a credible source and that a move should be announced in due course for Costa to start his next journey.

After failing at Valencia last season, this is a loan move he will be desperate to make work and no doubt there will be big money on the line for the winger.

Costa won’t be remembered very fondly, but he was part of the squad and played a big role in the side that got us back into the Premier League after all those years.

This is the start of getting rid of some of the deadwood in the squad though, with Kiko Casilla also moving on eventually after wasting away in the last couple of years.

Jesse Marsch will want these gaps to be filled in the squad though, and hopefully, after a couple of exits, we can now see some new arrivals being announced in the coming days and weeks.

Leeds in advanced talks to finalise another new signing as Orta makes move – report

Leeds United are in advanced talks to sign former Everton and Wigan goalkeeper Joel Robles this summer, according to Diaro AS.

The Spanish news outlet reported via their website on Thursday night (4 August) that director of football Victor Orta and goalkeeping coach Marcos Abad are both key to the deal that would see Robles, 32, head to Elland Road on a free transfer.

The Spanish shot-stopper has been a free agent since the end of last season when his contract expired with Real Betis.

AS adds that Jesse Marsch could view Robles as a third-choice goalkeeper behind Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson in the pecking order at Elland Road.

Finally

Leeds should never have gone into last season with the goalkeeping options they did.

Marcelo Bielsa and Marsch were extremely lucky that Meslier didn’t miss any games due to injury and that the Frenchman’s only issue was him having to be substituted off in one game against Wolves.

Klaesson stepped in and did well in that game at Molineux but can the young Norwegian be trusted to shine week in, week out should Meslier get injured or suspended? Probably not.

Robles isn’t a bad goalkeeper.

He’s got a decent amount of Premier League experience having made 51 appearances in England’s top-flight across spells at Everton and Wigan.

The former Spain Under-23 international has also played for Real Betis and Atletico Madrid in his home nation.

Robles, as a free transfer, isn’t a bad addition to the squad and hopefully his experience can help Meslier and Klaesson continue their development while he also adds some much-needed depth to Marsch’s options in between the sticks.

Leeds have signed seven players already this summer and it sure looks as though Robles will become the eighth addition for Orta.

In other Leeds United news, this Leeds star has taken Marsch’s decision personally as he looks to quit Elland Road this summer.

Leeds United set for mid-table safety with Bamford, Aaronson and Kristensen shining

The new Premier League season is almost here and that means it is prediction time for our Leeds United reporters. Leeds have made a lot of changes over the summer with players leaving and arriving at Elland Road and, if nothing else, this season promises to be entertaining.

No journalist relishes making predictions at the risk of looking very foolish come the end of the campaign, but both Beren Cross and Will Jackson have been brave enough to give their verdicts on the Leeds United have had a dressing room wake-up call from Jesse Marsch ahead of Wolves

Leeds United starlet had Championship interest before loan move to third tier side – report

Lewis Bate has left Leeds United on loan for Oxford United but he could have played in the Championship, according to Joe Donnohue.

The deal to send the 19-year-old to the Kassam Stadium was announced on Thursday (4 August) after he arrived at Elland Road last summer for a fee of £1.5million from Chelsea.

The Yellows play in League One at the moment and are expected to compete in the top half of the table as they have done over the past couple of seasons under Karl Robinson.

But Bate could have chosen to play in the second tier with Championship teams also interested in his services but he personally picked this specific move after talks with the management.

“This is a move chosen by the player after speaking with managers about style/gametime,” Donnohue said via his personal Twitter account. “Championship clubs were interested – not all of them well-run, either – but Bate was most convinced by what Oxford had to offer.”

Great decision

It might seem odd to pick League One over the Championship but it is actually a very smart choice on Bate’s behalf and credit has to go to everyone involved in the decision.

While the opportunity to test himself against high-quality opposition in the second tier has its obvious upsides, the chances are he would be playing for a side fighting towards the bottom of the league.

That would mean less possession and chance to express his talents on the ball whereas in League One with Oxford, he should have much more of the ball and be able to affect each result at the right end of the pitch.

At this stage in his career and with the style of play Jesse Marsch wants to pay at Elland Road, it would be pointless for Bate to go and play as a defacto defender in a team that are always up against it.

In other Leeds United news, this forgotten Whites man was surprised to hear that clubs wanted him on loan as he tries to find fitness after a long injury layoff.
