Leeds United announce departure of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla by mutual consent

Leeds United have announced the departure of goalkeeper Illan Meslier. He made just five appearances in all competitions and a 3-1 win over West Brom at Elland Road in the final game of the 2020/21 campaign proved to be his last in a Leeds shirt.

Swift Leeds United statement confirms senior player’s exit

Kiko Casilla‘s time at Leeds United is now officially over.

That’s after a brief statement from the club confirmed that the goalkeeper’s contract at Elland Road has been terminated by mutual consent.

Casilla joined Leeds from Real Madrid back in January 2019, and went on to make 62 appearances in all competitions for the club.

But after making some costly errors, the Spaniard dropped down the pecking order behind Illan Meslier at Elland Road, and was eventually allowed to leave on loan to Elche last season.

With that temporary move to La Liga having failed to really work out, the 35-year-old had found himself back at Leeds this summer, although his return to the club has been a brief one.

It has now been confirmed that Casilla has left Leeds permanently, with a statement on the club’s website simply saying:

“Leeds United and Kiko Casilla have parted company by mutual consent.

“We would like to thank Kiko for his contributions during his time at the club and we wish him well in the future.”

There has been 12 months remaining on Casilla’s contract with Leeds, which would have kept him at Elland Road until next summer.

This looks like a sensible decision for Leeds to make over the future of Casilla.

Having struggled throughout the past few seasons, it seems clear that he would not have made the required impact had he returned to the fold at Leeds, which would also have been harsh on Meslier.

As a result, letting him go seems best for all parties, and it should help Leeds in terms of clearing some of the wage budget, as they continue to search for new recruits in certain positions.

With everything in mind from Casilla’s time at Leeds, you get the feeling that this will go down as a signing that simply did not work out.

Leeds United news as Premier League rivals join race for Arnaud Kalimuendo

Here are the latest Cresswell is set to spend the season on loan with the Championship club after departing Elland Road earlier this summer. He made five Premier League appearances for the Whites last season, but made the switch to the Den in order to get more game time.

The 2 areas of Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United squad that simply have to be addressed next month

Leeds United still have some work to do as we approach the final week before the start of the Premier League season.

The base of the midfield has been addressed under Jesse Marsch as he looks to have replaced Kalvin Phillips, while he has found a similar livewire to cope with the loss of Raphinha – in the shape of Luis Sinisterra.

There are other very smart signings that have been made too, ensuring that other parts of his squad are not looking as alarmingly light as they have done since promotion.

The Leeds chief has more work to do to ensure he is well covered in all parts of his team, and here, we look at the two main areas he needs to focus on…

Striker

The most obvious place that Marsch needs to look at is his strike force.

Patrick Bamford, Joe Gelhardt, Rodrigo, and Sam Greenwood gives you a good indication of the variety of striker that Leeds have, but there is not enough consistent quality to take Leeds forward next season.

In Bamford and Gelhardt, Leeds have more ‘traditional’ number nines that will play through the middle, and in Rodrigo and Greenwood, we have two that can perform in different roles both out wide and from deeper in attacking midfield.

The player that we sign is more likely to fall into the latter category of forward for us and, given the links to Charles De Ketelaere and Arnaud Kalimuendo, it shows that the club would prefer someone who is just as much a creator as they are a goalscorer.

After losing Raphinha, we’re still to really replace the goals he scored to help keep us up, and that ought to be the priority.

Left-back

The other position that is dangerously thin at the moment is the left-back slot, with no recognised options currently available for the opening game against Wolves.

Junior Firpo is expected to be out for at least August as he nurses a pre-season knock, while the only other left-back at the club, Leif Davis, was sold to Ipswich Town this week.

It leaves Marsch with the experimental options of Pascal Struijk and Jack Harrison, both of whom would be badly wasted stuck at left-back.

It has been reported that the club are chasing a left-back actively now, and given that the season is not far away and there is no one to technically play there outside of the square peg solutions, it’s something that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

Newcastle United’s James Maddison bid highlights the different markets Leeds United are shopping in

Newcastle United’s ?40 million bid for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison is a large indicator of what Leeds United are up against in the Premier League. The Magpies saw their offer for Maddison rejected by Leicester with the Foxes quoting a valuation of around ?60 million.

While Maddison is undoubtedly worth every penny of Leicester’s large asking price, the money being branded around for a single player is just something Michael Skubala’s first Leeds United U21 side predicted as Sonny Perkins and Archie Gray feature

Finance expert: Leeds mooted to receive multi-million windfall amid proposed PL rule changes

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Leeds United may have a multi-million deal with a gambling company as their sleeve sponsor.

According to Dr Dan Plumley, this may even surpass the valuation of the current deal that’s in place with SBOTOP.

That’s because a new rule is likely to be imposed by the Premier League clubs which outlaws having gambling sponsors on the front of the jerseys.

However, they will continue to be allowed having the same company as their sleeve sponsors as that reduces the visibility.

Discussing this exclusively with MOT Leeds News, the Sheffield Hallam University expert said, “You’ve got to ask why ban one and not the other?

“Of course, you see more of the front of the shirt than the sleeves. However, it’s still visible on the sleeves so the exposure is still there.

“An interesting thing from this is why we might see some of the sleeve deals surpass the front of the shirt sponsorships.

“If they want to stay involved then we could see sleeve deals going to the tune of £10million as well as we’ve seen those amounts for front-of-shirt ones with Newcastle and Everton.”

The clubs want the rule changes to be phased in over three seasons so that those clubs who already have deals in place are not directly affected.

It’s understood that the required number of votes has already been reached which means that the motion is expected to pass.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have submitted a fresh bid to sign their first-choice target this summer as a Champions League club has pulled out of the deal.

Leeds United penny is finally about to drop for new signings at Elland Road

The Elland Road return

Seventy-eight days after Pascal Struijk’s dramatic header, Raphinha’s poignant pause and Kalvin Phillips’s familial penalty shootout, Leeds United are back at Elland Road. The Whites host Cagliari and it will be a first look at the turf ahead of the new season.

There is no getting away from that special first look at the carpet the grounds staff have been knitting together during the close season. At the time of writing, we may not be set for the sun-kissed Elland Road we cherish, but having everyone back together will be great.

The stadium will undoubtedly have tens of thousands packed in despite it being a Kiko Casilla’s Leeds United fate, 10 possible exits and Elland Road development latest

Injury returns?

There are four players going into Sunday’s game with unresolved question marks next to their names. Liam Cooper’s Achilles issue blighted the entirety of the Australia tour and he is badly in need of match time to have any chance of starting the new season on day one.

The Cagliari game will allow us to check in on the captain as well as Cody Drameh, who had a hamstring niggle in Perth, and Luis Sinisterra and Adam Forshaw, who were forced off in the Crystal Palace clash.

The left-back solution

The smart money seems to be heading towards Struijk as the likeliest starter at left-back on the opening day of the new season, but today may throw us a curveball. Leif Davis’s exit only narrows the field, while Jack Harrison is undoubtedly required in attack based on the injury and suspension situation in the final third.

Leo Hjelde was promising down that left flank last term, but Struijk’s seniority and Diego Llorente and Robin Koch’s readiness in the centre should mean the Dutchman can remain wider. Will there be another route Jesse Marsch goes down?

Bamford’s minutes

Half an hour against Brisbane Roar, an hour against Aston Villa and then 45 minutes against Crystal Palace. <a href="https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/all-about/patrick-bamford" target="_self" rel="Follow" data-link-tracking="InArticle

Leeds line up ‘surprise’ move to secure major signing, club hope to reach agreement – report

Leeds United are lining up a “surprise” move for Southampton striker Che Adams this summer, according to a report from The Sun.

Alan Nixon wrote for the newspaper on 30 July that Jesse Marsch is looking to bolster the forward department, and has earmarked the 26-year-old striker after missing out on Charles De Ketelaere.

Leeds are prepared to pay around £10million for the former Birmingham City striker, while the Saints want a bit more. However, there is optimism that a compromise can be reached.

Good move

The Whites have been very busy in the summer transfer window, and they have bolstered the squad in almost every department.

However, adding a quality striker remains a priority. Marsch has full faith in Patrick Bamford but the England striker struggled with injuries last season.

If he gets injured, Leeds will be left with young Joe Gelhardt, and the Whites could find themselves in the same doldrums as last season.

It’s important to add competition for places, and therefore adding another striker is key.

Adams was one of the targets for Marcelo Bielsa, but the Whites failed to pull off a deal for him previously.

He has made 110 appearances for the Saints and has scored 20 goals in the Premier League.

He is about to enter the peak years of his career, and Leeds must try their best to secure his signing. Adams will add both depth and quality to the squad.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have submitted a fresh bid to sign their first-choice target this summer as a Champions League club has pulled out of the deal.

Player to seal second permanent move of summer, Leeds offered major new transfer – reports

Leeds United have now been offered Atlas striker Julina Quinones with a major transfer now on the cards, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper has reported on its website that the Colombian hotwire would seal his second permanent move of the summer if a switch to Elland Road went through.

Quinones has only just made his move to Atlas permanent after spending the last season on loan and smashing in 15 goals on the way to the Mexican league title.

Leeds are said to have switched their attention to Quinones with Charles De Ketelaere finally set to complete his move to AC Milan in the coming days.

Described as a “huge” blow, it is shared that the Whites have already moved on as they look to strengthen in the final third for Jesse Marsch.

Victor Orta is hard at work with Quinones capable of playing out wide as well as through the middle, something which could offer Leeds many outlets.

On top of this, Gerardo Melin has shared that he was announced to him that the 25-year-old is already on his way to Leeds to complete his move in the past 24 hours.

Closing in?

The more these links appear, the more it looks like we could be bringing yet another piece of South American flair to the Premier League this summer.

Mexico isn’t anywhere near the level of the Premier League, but to smash home 15 goals and guide your team to the title along the way, it isn’t too bad.

This could offer the perfect level of competition to Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt, with the senior England international likely to start the season as number nine.

Quinones offers something both of those don’t, raw speed and that is something that gives us a new dimension in the final third in games and can be a real weapon.

This certainly isn’t the big-name or big-money signing we expected like De Ketelaere, but it is an option that can strengthen this Leeds side and possibly even open the door to another striker arriving.

Keep your eyes peeled for this one, and maybe even more in the final third.

Joe Gelhardt’s Leeds United growth has him ready to take next step under Jesse Marsch

Joe Gelhardt started last season on the periphery of Leeds United’s first-team squad. While many were aware of his talent, Gelhardt was still waiting to make his Premier League debut for the Whites this time last year.

The youngster was a regular scorer with the club’s under-23s, but he had to wait until October before he finally got the Marcelo Bielsa nod, coming off the bench for the final 13 minutes of a 1-0 defeat to Southampton on the south coast. Appearances started to come thick and fast over the winter months and he managed to produce some huge moments along the way to establish himself within the senior squad.

His last minute effort against Norwich City blew the roof off Elland Road, while his work to set-up Pascal Struijk in the final home game of the season went a long way towards helping Leeds snatch survival from the jaws of relegation at Brentford a week later. Indeed, in what was a tough campaign, the emergence of Gelhardt was one of the most positive storylines at the club last season.

Read more: Michael Skubala’s first Leeds United U21 side predicted as Sonny Perkins and Archie Gray feature

However, as he approaches his second Premier League season in the Whites’ first-team, it’s clear Gelhardt is now a key man within Jesse Marsch’s squad. The 20-year-old is no longer considered to be a rookie trying to edge his way into the senior picture, instead he is a vital figure in the dressing room and one that seems to be improving week on week.

He has been heavily involved in pre-season so far, sharing Marsch’s lone striker role with Patrick Bamford. He started Leeds’ 4-0 win over Blackpool and picked up plaudits for the way he set up Rodrigo for the club’s third goal at the LNER Community Stadium in York.

The former Wigan man then claimed a goal Down Under, nodding home a Dan James cross as Leeds kicked off their tour with a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in Gold Coast. He wasn’t used against Aston Villa due to some minor soreness, but he emerged at half-time against Crystal Palace in Perth and was arguably Leeds’ most dangerous man as he forced Vicente Guaita into a couple of fine saves.

Latching onto a perfectly weighted Sam Greenwood pass, he saw his chip turned wide by the Palace custodian and in the final few minutes of the contest, a curling effort from a tight angle was tipped around the post. It’s not hard to see why Marsch has placed so much trust in him since his appointment in February and as the new season approaches, he’ll be looking to the youngster, who is close to agreeing a new long-term deal at Elland Road, with regularity.

Gelhardt has displayed growth off the field, too, coming out of his shell and speaking maturely and confidently both to the press and the public. The Liverpudlian presented himself well on more than one occasion at fan events Down Under and when he was asked about his targets for the year, he gave a level-headed response.

“I just go with the flow and take it game by game,” he told the club’s Youtube channel. “Like any other player, I want to score more goals and help the team try and get as high in the league table as possible.”

Should Gelhardt continue on his current trajectory he should have no problem bettering his tally of two goals last season and while it’s tough to read into pre-season showings, it’s clear Leeds have a man who is ready to take the next step in his fledging career.

Leeds push to complete major new mystery transfer in next seven days – report

Leeds United are hopeful of completing one major transfer before the Premier League gets underway against Wolves on Saturday 6th August, according to Graham Smyth.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist shared that the Whites are looking for a new left-back as well as another striker at Elland Road, with Victor Orta hard at work.

Whoever it is being targeted is yet to be revealed either, with Leeds working hard to stay tight-lipped on potential new arrivals while the work is being done behind the scenes.

Writing in his latest column for the Yorkshire Evening Post in the past 24 hours, Smyth shared the latest on all things transfers coming from Elland Road.

“The Whites are hopeful of getting one of their targets through the door before the Premier League opener against Wolves on Saturday August 6 but are currently tight-lipped on the identity of targets and whatever deals are being worked on are yet to leak out,” he wrote.

Get it done.

At this very moment in time, the main priority simply has to be left-back.

Our only recognised option there was Leif Davis before he was sold to Ipswich Town in the past week, so Orta must have something up his sleeve to be confident of letting him go.

Junior Firpo is out until September at least, meaning we have a handful of Premier League games to get through with Pascal Struijk or Jack Harrison in that role for now.

Instead, Orta looks to be closing in on a new signing that could hopefully transform our fortunes in that area.

Hopefully, it can be done as soon as possible with the more training available to the new recruit before that first game, the better, with there being nothing like being thrown in the deep end.

The money is there to spend as we have seen with our pursuit of a new striker, but that may have to be placed on the backburner for the next week – time will tell.

2 players Leeds United should consider swooping for after giving outgoing transfer green-light

It seems as though Leeds United will indeed have to sign a new left-back in this summer’s transfer window.

On Monday, it was announced that Leif Davis has left Elland Road on a permanent basis, completing a move to League One side Ipswich Town.

That means that with Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas both currently out injured, Leeds do not have any fit and available senior left-backs to call upon going into the start of the season.

As a result, a new option in that position now looks to be something of a priority for Jesse Marsch, Victor Orta and co. and here, we’ve taken a look at two players Leeds should consider targeting to fill that void.

Josh Tymon

One option that has already been linked with Leeds during this summer’s transfer window, is Stoke City’s Josh Tymon.

The 23-year-old has plenty of experience in the Championship, so could be a decent back-up to come in now, while also having the time needed in his career, to develop and potentially become a first choice option for Leeds further down the line.

It has also been suggested that Stoke have set an asking price of ?6million for Tymon, which if correct, would be an easily affordable fee for Leeds to pay for a player who may spend much of the campaign as back-up, once Dallas and Firpo return to fitness.

Borna Sosa

Looking further afield, another option that could be worth considering for Leeds here, is Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa.

It has been reported that Leeds have previously held an interest in the left-back, who is apparently available this summer for a fee in the region of ?20million, amid links with a number of Europe’s big name clubs.

That fee means that Sosa would not be as much of a cheap option for Leeds in that role, but he could still be affordable, and the fact he already has some considerable top-flight experience, and is attracting that sort of interest, suggest he may be a more reliable option to take over that position, whenever required.

Do Leeds definitely need a left-back now Davis has gone?

Report: Leeds United told to pay premium to land quick fix transfer solution

Leeds United are going to have to pay more than ?7million in order to sign PSV man Philipp Max.

Thanks to an injury setback suffered by Junior Firpo, as well as the decision to sell Leif Davis to Ipswich Town, Leeds are currently without a left-back for the opening game of the season.

Jesse Marsch has confirmed that the club are going to be looking for a new option in the back end of the transfer window.

Tutto Mercato reported that a target of the club is PSV man Philipp Max, with Leeds having placed a near ?7million offer down for the German international.

However, the Eredivisie outfit are in a predicament in that position due to an injury for their other left-back, Mauro Junior.

Dutch outlet Eindhoven Dagblad are claiming that this setback for the Brazilian threatens to scupper any move for Max, knowing he’s their only real option now.

An upcoming Europa League qualifier means PSV are in no immediate rush to sell, and should they do so later in the window, it’s claimed a “mega” fee would be needed.

Yes

No

Test the waters.

It’s worth seeing if we can sign him this summer, even though I don’t think PSV will want to play ball.

If we learn that he is interested in the move, then it might be a good idea to try opening with a bid.

We need a left-back not only to cover for the next few weeks, but having someone to improve on Firpo, and Max does that.

Leeds United’s loanees aiming to prove a point as Championship prepares for kick off

The Championship gets underway this weekend and three Leeds United players will be preparing to make their debuts for their respective clubs. Jamie Shackleton, Charlie Cresswell and Tyler Roberts have all left Elland Road on loan this summer in the hope of picking up regular game time in the second tier and they’ll all have points to prove.

The trio would have found minutes hard to come by had they stayed with the Whites, but Jesse Marsch will be watching their progress carefully over the coming months. Here, Leeds Live take a look at the situations of the three Leeds men who will be hoping to feature in the Championship this weekend.

Jamie Shackleton – Millwall

After spending two seasons on the peripheries of the United first-team, all parties were in agreement that Shackleton needed to leave Elland Road this season to prevent his progress from stalling. The Whites were open to a permanent exit for Shackleton, but a loan agreement was reached with Millwall and the youngster is expected to play a key role at The Den.

Read more: Michael Skubala’s Leeds United in-tray as he gets to work as new U21s boss

He might also have the chance to pick up regular game time in his preferred position in the middle of the park. The Lions host Stoke City in the opening game of the season and should Gary Rowett give him the nod, he’ll be keen to make a strong first impression in south London.

Shackleton is no stranger to the rigours and demands of the Championship, of course. He was a regular under Marcelo Bielsa and he knows what it takes to win promotion, too, which is something Millwall are targeting after narrowly missing out on a play-off last time around.

Tyler Roberts – QPR

With the World Cup beginning to loom on the horizon, Roberts needs regular game time in order to nail down his spot in the Wales squad and it seemed unlikely that the required minutes would come with Leeds. The forward was in and out of the side last season and his spot in the side was far from guaranteed under Marsch this time around.

As such, the move to Loftus Road made sense for him and he’ll be determined to prove a point to those at his parent club by finding form and impressing with the Rs. Roberts did pick up a minor injury in pre-season, but he is in contention to make his debut against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

QPR have an option to buy Roberts at the end of the season, but Leeds will still be keeping a keen eye on his progress and form with the Championship club.

Charlie Cresswell – Millwall

Like the two names above, Cresswell’s need for first-team minutes was recognised this summer and with his path into Jesse Marsch’s side appearing crowded, the club were happy to loan him out to the Championship for the season. The defender spent a majority of last season in the under-23s side but at the end of the campaign he had clearly outgrown that level.

He had options, but Millwall were the club to win the race to sign the 19-year-old and it seems he has made quite the impression in pre-season. He’s won praise from Rowett for his performances and the goal he scored against Crystal Palace had supporters making player of the season predictions.

Cresswell is more than ready for the physical demands of the Championship and he is expected to play a important role for the Lions this season in the centre of defence.

Player likely to wave goodbye & thank agent in next 24 hours as Leeds table monster bid – report

Charles De Ketelaere is set to wave goodbye to Club Brugges in the next 24 hours with Leeds United still having their monster bid on the table, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The Italian newspaper has reported in its print edition [29 July, pg. 2] that unfortunately, the Belgian wonder will finally seal his dream move to AC Milan after a breakthrough is on the verge of being reached.

It is said that De Ketelaere will thank his agent and then make the move after he said no to a move to Elland Road with £33.5million still being on the table.

Writing in their latest snippet, La Gazzetta Dello Sport made it clear as they have tried to do for many weeks now that the move to the San Siro was happening.

“The break would be total and it is not even simple to assume the arrival in August of a €40million [£33.5million] from a large club,” they wrote.

“Charles said no to Leeds and let the world know that, for him, there is only Milan.

“More likely that today – at most tomorrow – is the day of the agreement, farewell to Brugges and thanks to the agent.”

Move on.

Please, let this be the sign to finally move on.

Victor Orta appears to have wasted a lot of time on this particular deal when it never really looked like happening, and except for a huge twist, it isn’t going to.

What is worst is that it looks as though no deal for a new striker is even that close, despite a new number nine being looked at as a priority since the day after we survived in the Premier League at Brentford.

How can that even happen?

Of course, strengthening the midfield and finding replacements for Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips so early was brilliant to see, but the struggle of this particular deal could sour the window.

Orta, as well as Andrea Radrizzani now has the huge task of finding another new striker who can come in and hit the ground running at Elland Road, with a left-back also on the cards.

Both deals aren’t exactly going smoothly we would say, but we are praying for some progress over this upcoming weekend ahead of the new Premier League season.

Leeds United have the ideal opportunity to give Crysencio Summerville what he’s been asking for

January painted the clearest picture yet for Leeds United on where Crysencio Summerville’s head is at in this stage of his career. The winger’s attempt to follow Cody Drameh out of Elland Road may have been blocked, but it only kicked the same debate down the road for another day.

Summerville’s perspective on his status and playing time with Leeds. The American was making all the right sounds about his desire to play the Dutchman in the way he had used Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood, but an ankle injury ended the campaign early.

Pre-season has brought with it talk of a new contract for Summerville and reassurances to the 20-year-old he will be trusted in the Premier League by Marsch. Five substitutions will inevitably bring more opportunities for those players on the fringes, but injuries will too.

Exclusive: Leeds transfer now on cards for best player in league, Marsch is very big fan

Leeds United would need to pay £4.2million to sign Atlas striker Julian Quinones, according to Sebastien Denis.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, the Foot Mercato journalist who broke the news first shared that Jesse Marsch was a big fan of the Colombian speedster.

The American is looking for a new striker alongside Victor Orta this summer, with Quinones described as the best player in Mexico last season after inspiring Atlas to become champions yet again.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Denis shared if the interest of Marsch had transformed into anything more concrete over the past week.

“It’s just an interest for the moment,” he said. “But, Marsch like his profile.

“[He is worth] €5million [£4.2million] – he is a striker, best player of the last Mexican championship.”

Priority.

Quinones appears to be another cheap fix to a potential big issue within this Leeds squad.

Victor Orta may be looking for bargains, with each player that is said to be liked by Marsch available for such a small price, with Mergim Berisha another example.

With the Wolves game only eight days away as the Premier League gets underway, the Whites need to act quickly as they get nowhere near close to a new number nine.

As things stand, Patrick Bamford will lead the line in that game, barring any injuries against Cagliari, with Joe Gelhardt either alongside him or ready to go off the bench.

Will Quinones be there too? Only time will tell after he lit up Mexico yet again in his latest season.

‘Arrogance’ – Summer signing shares what he has seen from Leeds young talent

Tyler Adams has been left impressed with Leeds United young talent Archie Gray.

Adams, who joined the Whites this summer from RB Leipzig for a fee of around £20m [The Atheltic], has suggested that Gray has got a “bit of arrogance” in him.

The 23-year-old has also added that Gray will have a “great career”, but the youngster doesn’t need to follow in his footsteps.

“I think Archie is going to have some big opportunities coming up this season,” said Adams, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post (28 July).

“Obviously, he’s still so young, but getting that experience is going to be important for him. When he’s on the field, he’s just himself, you can see he has that confidence, a little bit of arrogance through him and that’s what you need as a young player. And Jesse wants these types of players. He’s going to give him opportunities as long as he’s working hard, continuing to try to improve.

“It feels weird because that was like me when I first met Jesse and obviously he gave me that opportunity to sign and start my professional career so Archie seems to be, not following in my footsteps, but he’s going to have a great career.”

Huge talent

Gray is a top young talent, and it comes as no surprise that Adams has been left so impressed.

The former Leipzig player spent some time with the 16-year-old. Adams definitely feels that age is not a bar for the youngster and that Jesse Marsch will going to give him more chances this season.

Gray belongs to the great line of the Gray family, whose heroics have become legendary at the club. Archie could have a great career at Elland Road if he continues his development.

Marsch, like Marcelo Bielsa, loves to give opportunities to young talents, and Gray is expected to get some chances this season, could be in cup games.

Leeds have made some fantastic signings this summer, and despite losing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, they now have a very good squad.

There could be one or two more arrivals as well before the window closes. Along with new additions, it is important that the club continues to provide opportunities to young talents.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have submitted a fresh bid to sign their first-choice target this summer as a Champions League club has pulled out of the deal.

Mateusz Klich facing Leeds United dilemma forgotten since Thomas Christiansen’s era

Only one of the senior, fit Leeds United players failed to start any of the three friendlies in Australia. Mateusz Klich has more Whites appearances than all but three members of the current squad, but the popular Pole is facing his biggest fight for minutes since Thomas Christiansen shipped him out in 2018.

If the trend began with Jesse Marsch’s chopping and changing with Leeds and Klich is one of those competing for the central attacking midfielder berth.

Brenden Aaronson and Rodrigo are Marsch’s preferred picks behind a striker with 20-year-old Sam Greenwood’s versatility even meaning he has seen more action than Klich this summer. Once he was left out of the starting line-up and subsequent raft of half-time substitutes in Perth, Klich’s status was only underlined.

MOT View: Leeds should have had high-value £21m deal by now without obsessive £31m distraction

Leeds United look likely to miss out on signing prime attacking target Charles De Ketelaere from Club Brugge, which is no great surprise.

They were aways second best there, but more frustrating is that by maintaining a focus on the 21-year-old Belgian for so long they may have damaged their chances to complete a much cheaper and more viable deal for Arnaud Kalimuendo.

Signing the 20-year-old French striker might still be possible but the player and his new Paris Saint-Germain coach Cristophe Galtier like the idea of him staying in with the Ligue 1 champions, even if the club suits don’t.

At long last AC Milan upped their offer for De Ketelaere on Wednesday (27 July), with the total package now reaching the €35million asking price according to La Gazetta dello Sport journalist Luca Bianchin.

The Whites had long had a stronger offer, thought to be around €37million, ready for Club Brugge but the Belgian international had made clear from the start that he wasn’t interested in a move to Elland Road and only wanted the Serie A winners [Alexander Braeckman].

It isn’t entirely clear why United maintained their position in that race for so long when they apparently had little chance of succeeding, but in the mean time they appear to have lost ground on Kalimuendo.

After a season and a half on loan at Lens, scoring 21 goals along the way, Leeds put a €20million [£16.7million] offer in over a month ago, which is still considered likely to be enough by some [Miguel Delaney].

But according to L’Equipe on 9 July, PSG put a €25million price on him [£20.9million], and since then there has been little movement on the transfer front.

What has changed in the mean time is that the French champions started their preseason under new coach Galtier, where the young striker has shone.

He impressed his manager in the first match against Quevilly Rouen Metropole on 16 July, then scored in the next two wins over Kawasaki Frontale and Urawa Red Diamonds.

While the club’s new influential advisor Luis Campos is clearly ready to move the forward on, the preseason performances have given the coach a glimpse of what he is capable of, and allowed the player to feel that he belongs in the team.

He is now minded to stay and not start while sitting behind Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe and wants to pick up whatever game time is available after theirs [Canal Supporters].

But if Leeds had just met the asking price, still significantly lower than what they wanted to pay for De Ketelaere, before the friendly matches had kicked off none of this would have developed.

It is hard to escape the feeling that if the club had not been so intent on picking up the pieces if Milan were unable to secure a deal for the Belgian, they could have wrapped up a deal for Kalimuendo by giving Campos what he asked for in June and the Parisian goalscorer could have been in Jesse Marsch’s squad learning the American’s game plan.

Considering that PSG apparently offered the youngster in a big-money part exchange for Inter’s Milan Skriniar [La Gazetta dello Sport], and after signing Hugo Ekitike this summer still tried to hijack West Ham’s Gianluca Scamacca deal at the last [Sky Sports], it feels like the hierarchy in the French capital expect him to leave.

But even if he does arrive it will be a last-minute job now when it seems like it could have been done in good time if the Whites were focusing on this deal instead of the more expensive and harder to win one in Bruges.

For the most part the incoming business in the transfer window has been pretty impressive this summer, particularly with various players who have a history with the coach coming in to suit his ideas.

But there has been a frustrating blind spot in the pursuit for the help up front, and fans are still waiting to see one of the final pieces come through the doors at Elland Road.

In other Leeds United news, one surprise Whites player is likely to be part of the first-team squad this season which could be a big blessing in disguise.

Kim Jong Un threatens to use nukes amid tensions with US and South Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has warned he is ready to use his nuclear weapons in potential military conflicts with the United States and South Korea.

Mr Kim’s speech to war veterans on the 69th anniversary of the end of the 1950-53 Korean War were apparently meant to boost internal unity in the impoverished country suffering pandemic-related economic difficulties. North Korea will likely intensify its threats against the United States and South Korea as the allies prepare to expand summertime exercises the North views as an invasion rehearsal, some observers say.

“Our armed forces are completely prepared to respond to any crisis, and our country’s nuclear war deterrent is also ready to mobilise its absolute power dutifully, exactly and swiftly in accordance with its mission,” Mr Kim said in Wednesday’s speech, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

He accused the United States of “demonising” North Korea to justify its hostile policies. He said US-South Korea military drills show the US’s “double standards” and “gangster-like” aspects because it brands North Korea’s routine military activities — an apparent reference to its missile tests — as provocations or threats.

Mr Kim also called new South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol “a confrontation maniac” who has gone further than past South Korean leaders and said Mr Yoon’s conservative government was led by “gangsters”. Since taking office in May, the Yoon government has moved to strengthen Seoul’s military alliance with the United States and bolster its capacity to neutralise North Korean nuclear threats including a pre-emptive strike capability.

“Talking about military action against our nation, which possess absolute weapons that they fear the most, is preposterous and is very dangerous suicidal action,” Mr Kim said. “Such a dangerous attempt will be immediately punished by our powerful strength and the Yoon Suk Yeol government and his military will be annihilated.”

This year, Mr Kim has been increasingly threatening its rivals with his advancing nuclear programme in what some foreign experts say is an attempt to wrest outside concessions and achieve greater domestic unity. In April, Mr Kim said North Korea could pre-emptively use nuclear weapons if threatened, saying they would “never be confined to the single mission of war deterrent”.

Mr Kim’s military has also test-launched nuclear-capable missiles that place both the US mainland and South Korea within striking distance. The North Korean leader is seeking greater public support as his country’s economy has been battered by pandemic-related border shutdowns, US-led sanctions and his own mismanagement.

North Korea also admitted to its first Covid-19 outbreak in May, though the scale of illness and death is widely disputed in a country that lacks the modern medical capacity to handle it.

Late competition surfaces in pursuit of Leeds United target

Ligue 1 outfit Rennes have registered their interest in PSG striker and Leeds United target Arnaud Kalimuendo.

The Whites have ben very busy in the transfer market this summer, but are currently coming up short where an attacker is concerned, struggling to get their top target over the line.

Victor Orta has contingencies in place, and one of those is PSG youngster Arnaud Kalimuendo.

The French striker has been impressing under Christoph Galtier in pre-season for PSG, scoring twice during their pre-season tour of Japan, alongside the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbapp? and Neymar.

However, because of that star-studded attack, a move away remains a distinct possibility, in order for him to continue to progress after two great loans with Lens.

Leeds aren’t the only side interested in the forward, though, with L’Equipe now reporting that Ligue 1 outfit Rennes have made direct contact with the player.

Nice are also looking to sign the striker, but with Leeds’ offer already on the table, they are in a losing position at the moment to win this race.

That said, convincing Kalimuendo of an exit will be a significant ask as he aims to make himself an established first-team player at the Parc des Princes – something that the board and Galtier deem difficult due to the competition for places up front.

Yes

No

There’s no surprise that other sides in Ligue 1 are looking to sign him after the last two seasons that he’s had with Lens.

12 goals last term having turned 20 halfway through the season is a tremendous haul, and like Joe Gelhardt, he’s only going to get better from here on.

Kalimuendo would be a very good signing for us, but I just think that all of our focus appears to be on signing Charles De Ketalaere.

What is comforting is that we have backup plans in place and Kalimuendo would be a brilliant signing regardless.

Arsenal ready to accept big financial loss on senior player as Leeds United and European clubs circle

Leeds United are considering making an offer for Arsenal attacker Nicolas Pepe.

That’s according to a report from The Daily Mirror, who say that the Gunners will consider offers of around ?25million for the 27-year-old.

Pepe joined Arsenal from Lille back in the summer of 2019, but things have never really worked out for the attacker at The Emirates.

The Ivory Coast international has so far managed just 16 goals and nine assists in three seasons in the Premier League for the Gunners, and it now seems as though he could be on the move this summer.

According to this latest update, Leeds, along with Spanish side Sevilla and French duo Marseille and Lyon are all considering making an offer for the 27-year-old.

Despite the fact that Pepe is apparently keen to stay at Arsenal, it is claimed the club themselves are keen to salvage some money for the attacker.

As a result, the Gunners would reportedly be happy with a fee of ?25million for the sale of the 27-year-old. That is a big drop from the ?72million they are said to have paid Lille to make Pepe their record signing three years ago.

There are two years remaining on Pepe’s contract with Arsenal, securing his future in North London until the end of the 2023/24 season.

This is an interesting one to consider from a Leeds United perspective.

Their business so far this summer does seem to suggest that they could afford that asking price set by Arsenal, but it could be a risk to do so given Pepe is yet to really settle in the Premier League.

Indeed, it could also be argued that a centre forward is more of a priority for Leeds right now, while Pepe himself is more of a wide player.

As a result, it could be argued that there are other targets that Leeds may be better off pursuing in what remains of the transfer window to boost their attacking firepower.

Yes

No

MOT View: Leeds United find themselves in transfer triangle as challengers emerge in £20m race

Time is running out for Leeds United to sign a new striker this summer with the start of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign drawing close.

According to L’Equipe, Stade Rennes have now joined the Whites in the chase to sign Paris Saint-Germain starlet Arnaud Kalimuendo with OGC Nice also keen to sign the 20-year-old.

But while Rennes’ presence in the race is not likely to be welcomed by Victor Orta, he could use that as leverage on Leeds’ part to make an offer for the French side’s own talismanic striker.

On 17 July, L’Equipe reported that Leeds United were rivalling West Ham United for the signing of Martin Terrier from the Red and Blacks after his best ever season in front of goal, with 21 Ligue 1 goals to his name.

Only Kylian Mbappe and Wissam Ben Yedder scored more than the 25-year-old who is in the form of his life and Orta wants to bring the Frenchman to Elland Road and now that the Hammers have signed Gianluca Scamacca, the chance is theirs.

Kalimuendo, who PSG value at £21million [L’Equipe], is now the deciding factor and once his domino falls, the entire rally will go with him whichever way his future is decided.

Jesse Marsch would undoubtedly want either or, in a dream world, both players to join him in Yorkshire and resolve the striker issues he faced last season with Patrick Bamford heavily injury prone.

The Whites now find themselves in a tricky transfer triangle but unless the French sides become suddenly stubborn, the American manager should have one or the other signed up before the window slams shut, even if they have to wait until after the opening game of the season against Wolves.

In other Leeds United news, the club have just received a six-figure windfall as one of the fringe players has sealed his exit from LS11.

Euro club owners show no desire as Leeds wait to seal major signing amid recent devt – report

AC Milan owners Elliott Management have reportedly not expressed any desire to increase their transfer budget to sign Leeds United target Charles De Ketelaere.

According to the Daily Mail, Paolo Maldini and director of football Ricky Massara met with Bruges chief executive Vincent Mannaert on Tuesday, July 26.

The club are currently struggling to chalk out £31million to match the Whites’ bid – who are waiting in the wings to sign the Belgium international this summer.

Waiting game

Milan and Brugge are having way too many meetings without reaching a proper conclusion over the fate of this deal.

It’s been clear since the outset that the Italians cannot match Leeds’ offer and there’s no reason why Brugge would lower their valuation.

If there were no clubs willing to pay that much, then they could’ve removed a few millions from his transfer valuation, but the Whites are open to playing ball.

Their offer is on the table and while the 21-year-old wants Milan, he knows that a move to Leeds would not be the worst thing in the world either.

If he did not want a move to Elland Road at all costs, he would’ve informed his club and not kept the Premier League side hanging for so many weeks.

Mannaert could lose patience with Milan and there’s every possibility that he tells De Ketelaere that he’s accepting Leeds’ offer and the player will then have to decide what he wants to do.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have submitted a fresh bid to sign their first-choice target this summer as a Champions League club has pulled out of the deal.

Sinisterra, stopgaps and Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United in-tray with 10 days to go

Decide on the left-back stopgap

One of the main narratives of Leeds United’s summer still requires a happy ending. With Junior Firpo recovering from injury for a few more weeks and Leif Davis sold, Jesse Marsch needs to decide on which direction he takes.

In Australia, the head coach experimented with Jack Harrison, Pascal Struijk, Leo Hjelde and Davis across the three friendlies. None of that quartet caught the eye for the right reasons while they were Down Under in that role.

Harrison is surely required to play in the final third, especially with Daniel James’s suspension and Luis Sinisterra’s injury. That leaves Struijk or Hjelde as the most realistic possibilities for Marsch.

Through this week, Cagliari and into next week, Marsch needs to drill down into who he plays there and how he gets them purring in this system.

READ MORE: pre-season and has played no part in any of the friendlies as yet. Even if the captain is fit enough to play on Sunday, a maximum of 45 minutes to an hour on the field is not going to make up for the shortfall in sharpness he needs.

Talking with Cooper and agreeing on how he plots his way back to Premier League action is an important step across these next 10 days. That plan will also inform Marsch’s strategy for Sunday with the centre-back pairing he ultimately uses on the opening day a week on Saturday.

Exclusive: £1.7m wages on the line as Leeds table bid for major new striker transfer

Leeds United have offered £1.7million to sign Fenerbahce striker Mergim Berisha this summer, according to Omer Celikbasli.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, the SPOR journalist reported that the Turkish club have previously demanded £4.2million from other clubs.

It was shared that Berisha currently earns up £1.2million-per-year at Fenerbahce, but his demands could rise to £1.7million should a move to Elland Road be put in place.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Celikbasli shared the latest behind Jesse Marsch’s move for yet another reunion with a former player.

“Leeds United have offered €2million [£1.7m] for Mergim Berisha,” he said.

“Fenerbahce demanded €5million [£4.2m] from Stuttgart and Mainz as it wanted. Negotiations continue. Jesse Marsch knows Berisha and knows what he’s capable of. That’s why he wants his transfer.

“Berisha receives a salary of around €1.5million [£1.2m] from Fenerbahçe. Again, the average will ask for these numbers. It will be between €1.5-2million [£1.7m].”

Reunions.

Marsch has played it safe with the majority of his signings this summer.

Victor Orta has put in the hard work to get the deals over the line, with Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Tyler Adams all having featured under the American before.

That could either work perfectly or backfire dramatically, but early signs have looked positive in pre-season.

Berisha is available on the cheap it seems, and even on those wages, he wouldn’t be much of a risk.

Given that Club Brugges’ Charles De Ketelaere and Paris Saint-Germain’s Arnaud Kalimuendo have been heavily linked with a move, one of those two appears more likely right now.

Chief continues to bluff club for monster new transfer as Leeds £150m+ windfall eyed – report

Club Brugge are using the £34.1million bid from Leeds United to continue to bluff AC Milan in the race for Charles De Ketelaere, according to HLN.

The Belgian outlet shared that Brugges CEO, Vincent Mannaert, is described as a tough nut to crack in negotiations as the race for the striker continues.

It is shared that it is no surprise that a Premier League club who battled relegation last season can afford to offer more than the Serie A champions due to windfalls.

AC Milan have suffered very heavy losses in recent years despite their success, with no real revenue created from player sales on top of that.

Leeds, on the other hand, have absolutely flourished under another Italian, Andrea Radrizzani.

Not to mention the near £100million brought in for Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha this summer, the Whites also posted a profit in their latest financial year – something not many do.

The turnover at Elland Road is said to be above €200million [£169.5million], approaching Milan who had European football and won the Serie A.

Money.

Leeds have no issues here financially.

They have already met the asking price of Club Brugges and have informed De Ketelaere himself that they can meet his personal wage demands at Elland Road.

That is no surprise given we are now into our third year of Premier League football on the bounce, with the financial aspect of that simply out of this world.

No one in Europe can compete with the yearly income of a Premier League side, and that is why staying in the division for longer than one or two years is critical.

Radrizzani is spending that money, and can’t be told that he is holding back.

With Phillips and Raphinha being sold this year, even with our seven new signings, the club will likely post yet another profit, with it being immaculately run.

Club Brugge and Mannaert will know that, and hopefully, they hold out for more money and in turn, send De Ketelaere to Elland Road – we definitely need it.

De Ketelaere, Terrier, Kalimuendo, Harrison, Bate and Leeds United transfers state of play

Five weeks stand between Leeds United and the end of the summer transfer window. With the pre-season tour out of the way and the new season rapidly approaching, the Whites are taking their final stock checks before they get down to business.

Victor Orta has already added seven new faces to the squad, with two of those earmarked for under-21 football, but he Helder Costa can rely on Jorge Mendes to find him another club at the drop of a hat. Ian Poveda has suitors in Segunda Division, Major League Soccer and the Championship, who could loan him with a view to a permanent deal.

Lewis Bate’s exclusion from the Australia tour underlined his place in the pecking order and a loan for the 19-year-old is possible. Leeds see a long-term future for him at Elland Road and would only consider such an exit if it was at the right club in the right league.

Leeds United to bank six-figure windfall as Elland Road asset seals exit – report

Ipswich Town will be paying a transfer fee of £900,000 to Leeds United to sign defender Leif Davis, according to the Mirror journalist Darren Witcoop.

The 22-year-old has been given the chance to impress Jesse Marsch during pre-season with Junior Firpo out injured but the Newcastle-born left-back has not done enough to convince the American.

Marsch wants to be sure he can handle the Premier League but as he is unconvinced, the Whites have now agreed the sale of Davis to Portman Road where he will play in League One.

Davis’ exit leaves Leeds United with no recognised left-backs fit to play the opening game of the season against Wolves with the most likely candidates to replace him being Jack Harrison, Pascal Struijk or Leo Hjelde.

There is still a chance that Victor Orta will dip into the transfer market before Bruno Lage’s side visit Elland Road to find a new left-back but that would not be the only new signing he is trying to make.

Average

It has been an unfortunate time at Leeds for Davis after years of being a fringe player he could have finally got the chance he deserved this season if he had been on the ball down under on the pre-season tour.

With Firpo out of the equation, he would have had no competition at all in his position which would have made him a shoo-in to start against Wolves but he has ultimately been let down by his own averageness.

The fact he could not force his way into the Bournemouth side in the Championship last season says everything about whether he can cut it in the Premier League and at 22 years of age, he has not got that much time to grow anymore.

He needs to be playing every single week at this stage in his career and he is never going to get that while Leeds United are a Premier League team.

In other Leeds United news, the Arnaud Kalimuendo chase rumbles on but it may not be a permanent deal anymore as Christophe Galtier stands his ground.
