‘Dirty’ Leeds takeaway with broken toilet hit with one-star hygiene rating

A “dirty” Leeds takeaway was told to have a big clean up and fix their toilet by health inspectors, after receiving a one-star food hygiene rating.

Caribbean takeaway Jerk Express in Swarcliffe Avenue was visited by inspectors on April 7. A one-star rating is the second lowest rating possible, which means ‘major improvements are necessary’.

The work surface in kitchen was “dirty” and staff’s food hygiene knowledge was “poor”, according to the food inspectors, working on behalf of Leeds City Council.

Inspectors ordered Jerk Express to “replace the dirty/damaged work surface” and “repair the broken toilet,” the fridges and the floor also needed to be cleaned. The wash hand basin also told be kept clean and free from obstruction.

Inspectors said the hot water level had to be turned down, as it was “too hot to effectively wash hands”. Inspector added: “Your food handlers hygiene knowledge is poor.”

They also found meats being defrosted at room temperature, cooked chicken being stored in too warm conditions, no stock labels on prepared food, or probe thermometers and wipes on the premises.

The report also suggests there was no written food safety management system or allergen management system in place. Meat was also found to be defrosting in the freezer, which was just under 0C.

Jerk Express has been asked for a comment.

Ash Handley locks in England World Cup hopes and the rival who is the best in his position

Leeds Rhinos winger Ash Handley is refusing to give up on his dream of representing England at this year’s World Cup. Handley won his only England cap to date as a substitute in the 26-24 loss to the Combined Nations All Stars last June.

It was Shaun Wane’s first game in charge of England and his second match was the end-of-season win in France which Handley missed through injury. With the rearranged 2021 World Cup coming into clear focus, England will play an All Stars side coached by Ellery Hanley on June 18 in vital preparation for this autumn’s tournament.

Handley, arguably the Rhinos’ most consistent performer so far this season, is staying open-minded about his chances of making the cut for Wane’s World Cup squad. The 26-year-old told Rugby League live: “I just think playing well for Leeds has to be the main goal.

Read more: Blake Austin makes Leeds Rhinos future intentions clear as he provides contract update

“If you’re playing well for your club then that’s how you’re going to get selected – that’s certainly how it has been portrayed to me. My main focus is on getting over the line, doing the hard stuff, performing consistently for Leeds and then it’s out of my hands. The only thing I can control is playing my best rugby for Leeds every week. If I’m doing that then I think I would be in for a shot and then it’s down to whoever selects the side.”

Reflecting on his previous experience of the international set-up under Wane, Handley added: “I was involved for the first All Stars game and it was good to spend a few days inside the camp to see how Shaun went about his business.

“That was only a short camp and I didn’t play in the France game at the end of last year because I was injured. Since then, I’ve not really been involved in anything. Shaun said to me at the start of the year ‘I want you to concentrate on playing well for Leeds’.

“I’ve not heard anything since then, so that’s all I’ve been doing – concentrating on myself and playing well for Leeds. Then it comes down to the personal choice of whoever picks the side. Making the World Cup is obviously the goal, but this mid-season game is coming around very fast and I’ve not heard anything up to now.

“But you don’t get picked for a World Cup squad now, so my aim is to keep playing consistently, maybe pick up my form in the second half of the year, then who knows? It would be a dream come true to play for England at the World Cup.

“Everyone wants to play against the best players in the world and, if you don’t want to do that, then I don’t know why you’d even play the game. That’s what I’m aspiring to and hopefully the opportunity comes up.”

Handley believes St Helens star Tommy Makinson sets the standards for wingers in Super League.

“For me, Makinson is the stand-out winger in the competition because he works so hard in the backfield and is good at finishing off tries as well,” explained Handley. “He’s the one that you want to be playing like because he sets such a high standard of how to be a good winger.”

Handley has notched six tries in 13 Super League games this season and racked up some hugely impressive stats for his work-rate in yardage. The Leeds-born wideman is currently the highest metre-maker in Super League this year with 1,828 metres made. He is also top of the charts for carries with 216 – one more than his old Rhinos colleague Ryan Hall.

Assessing his form so far this term, Handley said: “I’d say it’s been okay – quite average really – and I’d like to get on the scoresheet a little bit more. I feel like a few have been chalked off during games when they could have been given.

“I’d like to have a few more opportunities to score but other than that I’ve been consistently playing decent rugby. I just want to keep that going but, if you’re in a winning team and you’re scoring tries, it makes you look a lot better doesn’t it?

“I think that’s a modern-day winger’s job now, doing the backfield carries, but you don’t want to just be doing that. You need to have the gloss on top of scoring tries as well to go with your yardage and carries. But the tries are what make the headlines. Like I say, I’ll just keep trying to perform well for Leeds and see where it takes me.”

Leeds United ‘revive interest’ in Southampton striker Che Adams

Leeds United could be set to land a striker who they have been trying to acquire for other two years after reports have emerged that Jesse Marsch could be targeting Che Adams. The Southampton striker was a target for Leeds in 2020, when they tried to bring him in on loan – but no move materialised.

However, it is now being reported by The Athletic that Marsch’s men have their eye on an unnamed Premier League forward and according to HITC, that man could be Saints ‘ Adams. Leeds will no doubt be looking for a striking partner for Patrick Bamford, along with Joe Gelhardt next season, with Spanish striker Rodrigo flattering to deceive since his big money move from Valencia.

Adams had fallen down the pecking order this past season with Armando Broja, Shane Long, Adam Armstong and Nathan Redmond competing for the striking positions. But Adams still finished as the club’s third top scorer with eight goals.

In January 2020, Leeds looked to bring him in loan with director of football, Victor Orta, said the Whites had targeted the then 23-year-old as he was struggling for game time at that moment in the 2019/20 campaign. Now Aston Villa striker Danny Ings was first in the attacking pecking order at St Mary’s and Adams had struggled since his ?15million move from Birmingham in the summer of 2019.

But Adams begun playing well in 2020, with Leeds failing to bring him in, before signing Jean-Kevin Augustin from RB Leipzig – a move that they would certainly regret.

Orta told Leeds Live : “I have a player [Adams] that the second week of December is really available for us, near to closing (the deal), and the second week of January he’s not available because he gave a nice assist against Leicester.”

Leeds to fight Borussia Dortmund for major new £10m transfer in crisis area – Phil Hay

Leeds United are closely following RB Salzburg defender Rasmus Kristensen this summer, according to Phil Hay on Tuesday morning [31 May].

The Athletic journalist has reported that the Danish right-back is expected to follow Brenden Aaronson out of the exit at the Austrian champions, and could cost up to £10million.

It is shared that Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are also keen on Kristensen, who worked under Jesse Marsch for two years during their time in Salzburg together.

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Hay shared the latest on the hunt for a new right-back with Brentford also said to be in the running as things stand.

“Leeds are short of alternatives and The Athletic understands that the club have been following Rasmus Kristensen, another RB Salzburg asset,” he wrote.

“The pair [Marsch and Kristensen] worked together for two years and Kristensen, like Aaronson, is widely expected to move on from Salzburg before the start of the 2022-23 term. Borussia Dortmund are keen on him and Brentford have been linked with him in the past fortnight.

“Kristensen, who would cost about £10m, is on international duty ahead of Denmark’s Nations League games.”

Crisis.

Leeds have got a real problem at right-back and it is clear to see for everyone.

Luke Ayling was suspended for the final three games of last season, underwent surgery on an ongoing injury and will now be out until Autumn, missing the start of the next campaign.

The same can be said for Stuart Dallas, who will also be out until the end of the year, if not longer after his horror injury picked up against Manchester City.

Robin Koch filled that role well in the final games of the campaign, but Marsch will know he needs more of a specialist, and that is what Kristensen can bring.

The 24-year-old lifted the Austrian Bundesliga with Aaronson last season, and offers great attacking output down the right-hand side, involved in 11 goals from his 29 appearances.

As he starts to break onto the scene of an impressive Denmark side, now would be the time for Leeds to strike while the iron is hot and £10million looks to be a real bargain.

Get it done.

Leeds United transfer links so far as Victor Orta eyes summer of strengthening

Leeds United will look to strengthen further heading into a crucial period of summer months after retaining their Premier League status. The Whites will once again play football in England’s top flight after a miraculously final day victory.

But with rumours circulating regarding the imminent futures of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, much has been made of the teams need to strengthen.

Here we have compiled a list of some of the players linked with a move to Elland Road, with Victor Orta tasked with even more additions following the signing of Brenden Aaranson.

READ MORE: ‘He’s got a bit of everything – Leeds United-linked Lewis O’Brien by those who know him best

Lewis O’Brien

Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien has been a name highly linked with a move across Yorkshire later this year.

A willing hard worker, the Terriers man is aged just 23 and has spent all of his career so far at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Estimated to be valued around the ?10m mark, O’Brien has made 50 appearances for Carlos Corberan’s team and could provide an extra slice of bit in the middle of midfielder for Jesse Marsch next season.

Noa Lang

22-year-old Noa Lang has been hotly tipped to make a move to the Premier League this summer, with United and West Ham both said to be interested.

A willing tricky winger, the Netherlands international could serve as a valued replacement for the potential departure of Raphinha too.

Brugge are reportedly holding out for EUR25m after yet another impressive season from the 22-year-old, with European interest from AC Milan also a factor United will have to contend with.

Calvin Ramsay

Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsay is also a name that is said to be of keen interest for Leeds and at only 18, serves as player with potential to grow into.

The Scot has been valued at a strong seven figure fee and could now be attracted to test his trade in England’s top flight next season.

Luke Ayling is currently the club’s first choice option and at 30, the teenager could provide strong back up given the sides strenuous injury record during the 21/22 campaign.

Morgan Gibbs White

Another impressive addition would be Wolves and England Under 21 star Morgan Gibbs White. The midfielder has spent all of last season on loan with Championship side Sheffield United.

Given his tall frame and strong stature, the 22-year-old will be bidding to break into Bruno Lage’s plans upon his return to Molineux next season.

But with Marsch said to be a keen fan, it is another potential option the club look to explore given the rumours surrounding the possible departure of Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds to battle Everton & Leicester for new signing, ‘mass’ overhaul expected elsewhere – report

Leeds United are set to battle the likes of Everton to sign Manchester United midfielder James Garner this summer, according to The Sun.

The newspaper have reported on their website that a host of Premier League clubs are interesting, including Leicester and Southampton, with the Foxes and Toffees most likely to pounce.

It is suggested that with Erik Ten Haag arriving at Old Trafford, a “mass overhaul” of the squad could take place, making players such as Garner potentially available.

Garner has enjoyed a very good weekend.

The midfielder started as Nottingham Forest secured promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in over 20 years with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield at Wembley.

Steve Cooper will likely retain his interest in the young maestro, meaning that is potentially another club in the race for his services this summer.

It is reported that Garner is believed to have the quality ready for the Premier League now, something he may need to look elsewhere for if he doesn’t get that at Old Trafford.

Battle.

Out of Jesse Marsch, Frank Lampard and Brenden Rodgers, it appears as though the latter is the most demanding of this potential signing.

That is no surprise given the likelihood of Youri Tielemans sealing his big exit this summer, with Kalvin Phillips having more chance of sticking around and signing a new contract.

Much will depend on the future of the Yorkshire Pirlo on whether we push hard for midfield reinforcements, with more than one needed if he does move on from Elland Road.

If Phillips sticks around, Marsch and Victor Orta may only push for one new central midfielder and it would likely be a permanent deal to help improve the squad, rather than a loan signing for depth.

Garner has been solid at Forest, but he hasn’t exactly blown the Championship away, and it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to miss out on this one.

Would he consistently start at anywhere apart from Forest? Most likely not.

Mixed fortunes for the players who have left Leeds United in last 12 months

The summer window usually promises plenty of arrivals for clubs up and down the country. But, it also means plenty of departures too.

LeedsLive takes a look at how the Whites former players, who left in the summer of 2021, have got on away from Elland Road.

Pablo Hernandez

Pablo Hernandez will always be fondly remembered at Elland Road.

The 37-year-old spent five seasons with Leeds and was a key member of the Marcelo Bielsa side that secured promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign. Following his release last summer, Hernandez signed for CD Castell?n who play in the third tier of Spanish football.

READ MORE: ‘He’s got a bit of everything – Leeds United-linked Lewis O’Brien by those who know him best

However, he still holds Leeds fondly in his heart and was even in the ground for the Whites dramatic 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion which all but saved their season.

Ezgjan Alioski

Ezgjan Alioski spent four seasons at Elland Road, making over 150 appearances for Leeds United.

He played a pivotal part in helping Leeds to an impressive ninth place finish in the Premier League during the 2020/21 campaign under Marcelo Bielsa.

However, while Leeds did offer Alioski a new contract following the end of that season, the Macedonian international opted to leave Elland Road on a free.

The 30-year-old signed for Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli and has enjoyed a strong season. The winger turned left-back scored six goals and registered eight assists this season.

Gaetano Berardi

Similar to Alioski, Gaetano Berardi was another defender who made over 150 appearances for Leeds during his time at Elland Road. He only made two appearances during his final season with the Whites before being released that summer.

Following his release, Berardi signed for Swiss side FC Sion in January 2022. To date, he has made nine appearances so far for Sion.

Barry Douglas

Barry Douglas left Leeds on a free last summer to rejoin Polish side Lech Poznan, where he had previously spent three years. And Douglas has enjoyed immediate success on his return to Poland.

The left-back made 19 appearances in all competitions for Lech Poznan, helping them to secure the Ekstraklasa title this season.

And the rest…

Oliver Casey signed for Blackpool last summer and made six appearances in the Championship this season scoring one goal. Niall Huggins joined Sunderland who earned promotion back to the Championship after beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in the League One play-off final. Huggins made two appearances this season for the Black Cats. Robbie Gotts has walked straight into Barrow’s starting line-up since his departure from Leeds. Gotts made 35 appearances in League Two for the Bluebirds this season.

The Leeds United youngsters who could make the step up into the first team for 2022/23

There are very few sets of supporters more passionate about seeing a good young player break through the ranks than the Leeds United faithful. The likes of Alan Smith, Jonathan Woodgate, James Milner and Aaron Lennon have all set a benchmark that is there to be targeted for all current and future Elland Road hopefuls.

With the 2021/22 campaign now over, we look at 10 youngsters who will be hoping they can make a big impact on the Whites’ first team next season:

Lewis Bate (19) – the Sidcup-born midfielder has represented England at under-17, under-18 and under-21 level and came through the youth ranks at Chelsea before joining the Whites last summer for a fee believed to be in the region of ?1.5million. He went on to score for United’s Under 23s during a 5-3 EFL Trophy defeat at Salford.

READ MORE: Four options Leeds United could pursue in worst-case Kalvin Phillips scenario

Bate will have subsequently been disappointed that his Premier League debut at West Ham in January saw him introduced as a 22nd-minute substitute and then replaced before the second half’s midway point after a tactical switch by Marcelo Bielsa, but he went on to feature twice under Jesse Marsch during the vital final month of the campaign, which will give him encouragement that he can feature more regularly during 2022/23.

Charlie Cresswell (19)

The son of former Leeds striker Richard acquitted himself really well on his full Premier League debut during September’s 2-1 home defeat to West Ham and became an England under-21 international in November. Also given subsequent minutes during four more league contests and looks to have all the physical attributes and mental aptitude to make an even bigger impact next term.

An Under-23 title-winning captain, he is also regarded as a player with natural leadership qualities.

Cody Drameh (20)

The Dulwich-born full back also became an England under-21 international in November and was given his first Whites start in the Premier League during December’s 4-1 home defeat to Arsenal, having already been handed two substitute outings by Bielsa. Spent the second half of the season at Championship club Cardiff, where he racked up encouraging reports and 22 starts for ex-Leeds striker Steve Morison.

That exposure should give him the confidence to make significant strides with his parent club next term.

Archie Gray (16)

Everyone was hoping that they might get a glimpse of the great-nephew of United legend Eddie and grandson of former Elland Road favourite Frank in a first-team shirt after he first made the bench at the age of 15 for the December meeting with Arsenal. Further spells in the dugout followed, as he furthered his footballing education by witnessing first-hand what is required at the highest professional level.

He did feature in the 4-1 EFL Trophy defeat at Tranmere in September teeing up Amari Miller for the team’s consolation, before rattling in a 35-yard strike for the Under 23s against Manchester United in March. Gray has also captained England U16s and, whilst expectation needs to be managed carefully given his tender years, his progress will continue to be closely followed by all United supporters in 2022/23.

Sam Greenwood (20)

Clearly rated enough by Marsch to be given his full Premier League debut during the vital final-day contest at Brentford, where he was asked to play in midfield, as opposed to his normal striking role. He did not disappoint either with an enthusiastic, hard-working 85 minutes, before he made way for Mateusz Klich.

Another who debuted for England Under 21s in November and marked his debut for that age group with a goal during the 3-2 defeat to Georgia. Looks likely to be given a good chance to further prove his credentials in pre-season, but Marsch now knows he can trust him to do a job in the most pressurised of environments when needed.

Leo Fjur Helde (18)

He became the youngest Norwegian to play in the Premier League when he came on as a substitute against West Ham in January. One more outing from the bench followed against Everton, but he did not feature at all under Marsch, despite the team’s injury woes, and looks to have a big challenge on his hands to make the breakthrough during 2022/23.

Jack Jenkins (20)

The midfielder signed a new three-year deal in September, but was unable to add to his one senior first-team appearance for the Whites in the 2020/21 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Crawley, where he was used as a 45th-minute substitute. Will be 21 in November and, if he still looks a fair distance from Marsch’s first-team plans in August, might benefit from a loan move.

Liam McCarron (21)

Having made his senior debut at the age of 17 and gone on to rack up 20 outings on loan for Carlisle, the Scotland under-19 international winger is at a stage in his career now where he needs more exposure than the one 81st-minute substitute outing (against Arsenal for Leeds in December) that he has experienced since. Another one who would probably profit from football elsewhere in 2022/23.

Stuart McKinstry (19)

Showed he had the nerve to convert the winning penalty during an EFL Cup shoot-out victory over Fulham in September. Also handed a brief substitute outing in the Premier League at Tottenham two months later. Another one to take a good look at in pre-season before pondering on his likely prospects for next term.

Kris Moore (18)

The centre back signed a pro deal for the club in January having made the first-team bench. He featured in all three of the club’s EFL Trophy contests last term when the side conceded a total of 12 goals in three games against Tranmere, Oldham and Salford, but the experience will have no doubt provided a valuable insight into the physical requirements of men’s football.

Leeds United eyeing ?10m midfielder swoop as they wait on outcome of Huddersfield Town v Nottingham Forest

Lewis O’Brien is once again on Leeds United’s radar heading into the summer transfer window.

Leeds secured their Premier League status for another season last weekend and work has already been done to strengthen Jesse Marsch’s squad.

Brenden Aaronson has arrived from RB Salzburg, giving Leeds depth in the attacking midfield area.

However, more work looks set to be done on strengthening that particular problem position.

As per a report from The Sun, Leeds retain an interest in Huddersfield Town midfielder, O’Brien, who was on their radar last summer under Marcelo Bielsa.

In the end, Huddersfield kept hold of the 23-year-old and tied him down to a new contract.

However, this report claims that Leeds could make a fresh ?10m move to sign the midfielder this summer, with their chances of doing the deal increasing after a survival.

A potential stumbling block, though, could be Huddersfield winning promotion to the Premier League and offering O’Brien a top-flight chance at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Huddersfield face Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final this afternoon, with a place in the Premier League on the line.

Yes

No

O’Brien has improved massively over the last 12 months.

When Leeds were initially plotting a move for him, you felt he still had a touch of developing to do before he was ready for the Premier League.

However, after an outstanding season with Huddersfield, there’s no denying he looks a top-flight player.

Leeds could find so many uses for him, too, either in a double pivot or as an inverted winger, supporting attacks.

The 23-year-old is a bundle of energy and would be a top signing this summer at ?10m.

Of course, though, this deal is resting on Forest beating Huddersfield this afternoon, as Town winning promotion would surely lead to them retaining O’Brien and handing him fresh terms.

Quiz: One question about every Leeds United first-team player – Can you score 100%?

Leeds wait on key Sunday news ahead of bid for £10m man who tore up his division – report

Leeds United will make a new approach for Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O’Brien after failing last summer, according to The Sun.

Despite “lengthy enquiries” a year ago the Whites didn’t put forward a “decent offer” for the 23-year-old and he was rewarded with a pay rise at his current club.

The Terriers will look to keep hold of him for a second time if they reach the Premier League, as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest in the playoff final on Sunday afternoon (29 May).

According to The Sun, United can afford the £10million it would take to sign him now, but “could miss out again” if their neighbours reach the top flight.

If successful his current side are prepared to offer him another improved contract that removes the low release clause in his deal.

The midfield man has been a vital part of their promotion push this year, missing only four games all season on the way to 49 appearances in all competitions where, in the words of the Sun report, he “torn up the Championship with his hard running and clever counter-attacking skills”.

Second time lucky

If this move comes off it certainly looks like Victor Orta is looking to make amends this summer for the failures of the past 12 months.

The squad was left badly exposed by the lack of January arrivals, after last summer’s additions of Dan James and Junior Firpo failed to shine.

After kicking off with the quick move to rectify the winter window’s fruitless chase of Brenden Aaronson this week, the club appears to be gearing up to right the wrongs of not bringing O’Brien in a year ago.

With Kalvin Phillips out for the majority of the year the midfield department was left lacking, especially with Adam Forshaw also suffering with injury.

The future at Elland Road for the former is increasingly unclear amid interest from Manchester City, but the position would appear to need strengthening either way.

O’Brien has been virtually ever-present this season, in stark contrast to most of the Whites’ squad, as Huddersfield finished third in the Championship.

United will hope that the success ends there as promotion might make it tough to land him, so key figures at Elland Road are sure to be watching events at Wembley closely.

In other Leeds United news, the club are reportedly likely to sell two key stars this summer.

The Marcelo Bielsa goal tactic Jesse Marsch will want to recapture at Leeds United

Leeds United failed to replicate the standards they set in their first campaign back in the Premier League last season. The Whites were the division’s entertainers, scoring goals from all angles to secure a ninth-place finish but could not continue that into their second year back in the top-flight.

Leeds were without Patrick Bamford for almost the entire season and suffered long-term injuries to other key players such as Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper. And one thing that clearly took a hit from previous seasons under Marcelo Bielsa was the intensity of their football, and more specifically in this case – the speed of their counter-attacks.

In the 2020/21 campaign, Leeds scored the most number of counter-attacking goals in the Premier League with seven, according to statistics taken from WhoScored. Their ability to transform defence into attack was second to none.

READ MORE: Four options Leeds United could pursue in worst-case Kalvin Phillips scenario

However, this time around Leeds just could not recreate that brand of football and that is evident in the fact they were unable to score a single counter-attacking goal all season. They were one of just two teams in the Premier League to do this, with the other side being Chelsea.

With pace on the break coming from the likes of Raphinha, Dan James and Jack Harrison, Leeds should’ve had all the ingredients to be successful in this particular aspect of the game. Jesse Marsch is a manager who likes his team to be quick in transitions and so next season, this is something he must look to rediscover if Leeds are to be successful in the Premier League again.

‘Leeds have always said…’ – Journalist shares when star man transfer-saga is set to end

Leeds expect Kalvin Phillips to sign a new contract at Elland Road at the end of the summer, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The Whites star midfielder has been linked with a mega money move away from the club, with Manchester United [MEN] and Manchester City [Telegraph] tipped to make a move this summer.

However Leeds sources have been coy on talk of a potential exit with a new contract on the table for the boyhood Whites fan, and now journalist Talbot has told GiveMeSport when he expects the 26-year-old to put pen to paper and end speculation.

“With Kalvin Phillips, Leeds have always said to me that he will be signing a contract at the end of the summer,” he said.

“It was implied that would be [the case] if they survived in the Premier League and they have survived, so you kind of think Kalvin Phillips would be signing the contract.”

Encouraging

With Leeds fans biting their nails about the future of their main man in midfield, this is finally a positive update to the saga.

Fans have been hopeful more than confident that Phillips would follow through with what he said at the back-end of the season and sign a new deal following the club’s survival.

But as interest from Champions League clubs became a reality, it seemed like a decision to stay would be harder than first assumed.

But with the club calm about the situation and claiming the plan has always been for a contract to be sealed at the end of the window, there seems to be nothing to worry about.

No matter who comes into the club this summer during the window, if they can keep Phillips and get him to put pen to paper on a fresh contract then that will be the best business they do.

Leeds United season player ratings as Raphinha and Gelhardt lead the way

Leeds United fans have handed Raphinha the highest rating of any member of the squad this season. The Brazilian received an average rating of 8.1 from supporters – the only player to be rated higher than an eight in the entire side.

In a season of struggle for Leeds, Raphinha’s performances, particularly in the first half of the season, almost single-handedly kept the Whites out of the bottom three. He netted eight goals before Christmas when everyone around him was struggling to find the net consistently.

In second place for Leeds was young attacker Joe Gelhardt, who received an average rating of 7.5 . Despite only starting five matches, he had a superb breakthrough campaign with a string of fine performances from the bench.

READ MORE: Four options Leeds United could pursue in worst-case Kalvin Phillips scenario

He netted two goals, provided two assists and won two penalties in just 732 minutes of football, which averages out at a goal contribution every 122 minutes. A bigger role beckons for him next season regardless of Leeds’ summer transfer activity.

Jack Harrison, Illan Meslier and Stuart Dallas made up the remainder of the fans’ top five, with former two earning ratings of 7.1 , and the latter 7.0. At the other end, Tyler Roberts was Leeds supporters’ lowest rated player, receiving an average of just 3.5.

Junior Firpo was not much better at 3.8, though he did show signs of improvement during the final few matches of the season. Patrick Bamford’s rating of 4.0 is perhaps indicative of the torrid injury struggles he endured over the course of the campaign, playing just nine times.

Here is a full list of how you rated each player:

Raphinha – 8.1

Joe Gelhardt – 7.5

Jack Harrison – 7.1

Illan Meslier – 7.1

Stuart Dallas – 7.0

Kalvin Phillips – 6.4

Sam Greenwood – 6.3

Pascal Struijk – 6.3

Adam Forshaw – 6.2

Liam Cooper – 6.1

Luke Ayling – 5.9

Robin Koch – 5.8

Charlie Cresswell – 5.7

Diego Llorente – 5.6

Daniel James – 5.2

Mateusz Klich – 5.1

Crysencio Summerville – 5.0

Barcelona crisis: Major update on Raphinha exit as Leeds star going nowhere – report

Barcelona have been hit by a crisis as they attempt to sign Leeds United star Raphinha, according to MARCA.

The Spanish outlet have reported on their website that the Catalan giants can sign no players as things stand, including the Whites wizard and Robert Lewandowski.

It is shared that there is still huge debt at the Nou Camp, and financial fair play rulings are still hanging over the head of the club with no resolutions.

Joan Laporta is close to taking drastic measures by selling players that could bring in a decent figure as this crisis continues at Barcelona.

Leeds will not mind one little bit at all, as the superstar, currently away with Brazil, will be going nowhere as things stand at Elland Road.

It is suggested that several unnamed deals were agreed upon, but the funds simply aren’t available to get the deal over the line as things stand.

Marca also suggests that some players are prepared to wait for their move to the Nou Camp, but again, it doesn’t mention if one of those is Raphinha.

Stuck.

One man who could be left very red-faced by all of this is Deco.

The agent has appeared to tell his client and Barcelona that this deal can be completed for very cheap, but that was never going to be the case after Leeds remained in the Premier League.

The ball is very firmly in our court, and why should we lower our demands just because Barcelona have entered negotiations for a deal knowing they have no money?

Signing the best players requires a lot of money, and if you don’t have it, you may as well call it off now.

Leeds could use this as ammunition to get Raphinha to sign a new long-term contract at Elland Road, and if big money is offered, we can’t see why he would turn that down.

Barcelona are currently in crisis and as things stand, the Brazilian wizard is going nowhere.

Four Championship free agents who could make the step up to the Premier League for Leeds United

The gap in quality between the lower end of the Premier League and the top of the Championship seems to have closed in the last few years. A number of players have made the step up and impressed immediately, slowly removing the stigma which had attached itself to buying players from the second tier.

In their first season following Championship triumph, Leeds United were a perfect example of how it has become easier to make the step up. Kalvin Phillips, Bamford, Liam Cooper and Jack Harrison – whilst all impressive during the 2019/20 campaign – showed their quality in the top flight.

With Victor Orta’s transfer strategy not really paying off when recruiting across Europe, it might be wise to consider the English market this summer. While it is certainly important to pick and choose, going into the Championship may provide a low-risk option.

Read more: Leeds United target Calvin Ramsay handed advice as lofty prediction made

An option that would come with even less risk, albeit with the prospect of less reward, would be to look at free agents in the second tier. There are four that we have picked out whose contracts are expiring who could feasibly make the step up.

Sam Johnstone – West Brom

The expiration of Sam Johnstone’s contract at West Brom is a decision that has been made by him rather than the club. There is no doubt that he is a high-quality goalkeeper and while he wouldn’t necessarily displace Illan Meslier, there was an interest at one stage for Leeds to sign another, more experienced shot stopper.

He will know that his chances of a return to the England squad will only be boosted by playing in the top flight after he missed out on Gareth Southgate’s squad for the June internationals. However, with it unlucky that he’d be number one ahead of Meslier, it’s unlikely he’d be interested in playing back up.

Jed Wallace – Millwall

It’s not yet confirmed that Jed Wallace will be leaving Millwall this summer as he is waiting until after his wedding to make a final decision. Although, should a team like Leeds make a proposal prior to that decision, he could be tempted into leaving.

The Whites were linked with the 28-year-old a few months ago in the knowledge that his contract was expiring so they may well return with a contract offer. He has admitted that he harbours ambitions of playing in the Premier League and, at his age, he may not have many more chances after this summer.

Malcolm Ebiowei – Derby County

Derby’s ongoing financial issues have made it hard for them to agree any deals with players whose contracts are expiring. One of them is highly-rated 18-year-old Malcolm Ebiowei who is already on the radar of several Premier League sides.

He made 16 appearances in the Championship in his breakthrough campaign for the Rams and would be the perfect profile of player to continue Orta’s youth development project. Unlike at clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham – teams he’s been linked with so far – he would likely get the chance of some first-team action at Elland Road.

Tom Lawrence – Derby County

The last player on this short list is another Derby player and, instead of a rising prospect, Tom Lawrence is a very established senior player. Like Wallace, he has been linked with Leeds in recent weeks and months and will surely be on the move with Wayne Rooney’s side set to play in League One next season.

He has never quite been able to make the grade at Premier League level but with 11 goals and five assists from midfield for Derby this season, it’s a case of now or never. He might be tempted by a lower risk move north of the border with Rangers and Celtic both said to be interested in a move for the 28-year-old among other top-flight clubs.

Star likely to get Premier League move regardless of huge game, Leeds watch closely – report

Leeds United will be watching the Championship play-off final between Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield very closely on Sunday afternoon [29th May].

The Daily Mail has reported that the Whites have been watching Brennan Johnson very closely this season after his exploits at the City Ground under Steve Cooper.

It is shared that the Welsh international will likely become a Premier League player, even if his Forest side end up losing to our West Yorkshire rivals at Wembley.

Leeds will face a battle to get a deal over the line though.

Johnson is about to enter the final 12 months of his deal with Forest, and promotion to the Premier League would see him likely sign a new contract.

If that doesn’t happen, Forest are in a very vulnerable position.

The Whites, as well as Newcastle and Leicester, are said to be watching the situation very closely and could be sent into battle to get his signature across the line.

At all costs.

This is one of those deals that Leeds simply has to be at the front of the queue for.

Johnson has lighted the Championship up with ease in this past season and is a huge reason behind the success of Nottingham Forest, even Cooper himself would admit that.

Look at players such as Jarrod Bowen to show how well Championship stars can perform in the Premier League, and Johnson certainly fits in that category.

The 21-year-old has scored 18 goals and delivered 10 assists in his 48 games so far this season, including an all-important strike in the play-off semi-finals against Sheffield United.

Not beating Huddersfield will see Forest crumble, with the majority of their squad picked apart – something that will surely be sending nerves through the roof as we speak.

Leeds need to have that bid ready to win the race for this one, Victor Orta will be lauded if he can pull it off.

Bookmakers’ odds suggest busy summer transfer window incoming for Leeds United

The transfer rumour mill is in full flow despite there being just over a month until the summer window opens on July 1. It looks set to be a busy one for Leeds United with the futures of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips still to be decided.

Brenden Aaronson’s arrival has already been announced by the club and he will not be the only one coming through the door at Elland Road over the next few months. Further reinforcements are definitely required, especially if there are any high-profile departures.

Raphinha, Kalvin Phillips and even Jack Harrison continue to be the subjects of transfer rumours as they have all been linked with a host of different clubs. But, if Leeds can show their ambition throughout the transfer window, it might tempt the trio into staying.

Read more:What Leeds United need to do next in the transfer market following Brenden Aaronson signing

We have taken a look at the odds currently being offered by the bookmakers for those three players, as well as any potential incomings.

Raphinha

Starting with the player who, at present, looks most likely to be leaving Leeds this summer. If Raphinha is to go anywhere, it looks like it’ll be Barcelona but there have been plenty of rumours linking him with different Premier League sides.

The odds are as follows:

? Barcelona – 1/2

? Newcastle – 10/1

? Chelsea – 12/1

? Manchester United – 12/1

? Bayern Munich – 16/1

? West Ham – 16/1

? Liverpool – 25/1

? PSG – 25/1

? Arsenal – 28/1

? Real Madrid – 33/1

? Manchester City – 50/1

? Tottenham – 50/1

Kalvin Phillips

There won’t be too many Leeds supporters unduly worried about a potential Phillips departure as – even in the worst-case scenario – they know that the Whites will get a huge fee for his services. Although, they are aware that most of his potential suitors are Premier League sides and they won’t want him moving to another top-flight club.

Here are the current odds:

? Manchester City – 4/6

? Arsenal – 12/1

? Newcastle – 14/1

? Aston Villa – 16/1

? Liverpool – 20/1

? West Ham – 25/1

? Manchester United – 33/1

? Real Madrid – 33/1

? Tottenham – 33/1

Jack Harrison

Leeds supporters wouldn’t have really considered the possibility of Harrison leaving this summer, but recent reports suggest that there are a few teams are interested in his services. Only a few sides have been linked so far but more could come knocking if he outlines a desire to leave.

His odds:

? Newcastle – 4/1

? West Ham – 14/1

? Aston Villa – 20/1

? Manchester United – 33/1

Potential incomings

There are 14 players on whom odds are being offered for a Leeds move. At the moment, there is only really one of them that stands out as a deal with a strong likelihood of happening although odds are being offered on the other 13 so they can’t be totally ruled out.

In order of most likely to least likely, here are the players in question:

? Takumi Minamino – 2/1

? Ryan Kent – 8/1

? Divock Origi – 9/1

? Eddie Nketiah – 10/1

? Adama Traore – 12/1

? Conor Gallagher – 12/1

? Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 12/1

? Maxwel Cornet – 16/1

? Dwight McNeil – 16/1

? Alexandre Lacazette – 20/1

? Jesse Lingard – 25/1

? Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 25/1

? Danny Ings – 25/1

? Sam Johnstone – 25/1

Goal machine now ‘One to keep an eye on’ for major Leeds transfer after Aaronson news – report

New York City FC talisman Valentin Castellanos is now “one to watch” for Leeds United after the deal for Brenden Aaronson was confirmed on Thursday [26 May].

That’s according to Dean Jones, who has hinted that the Whites could already be moving on to another target ahead of a busy summer window ahead.

Castellanos has been heavily linked with the Whites before, but there is now a real want for a new striker as Victor Orta gets to work already.

Speaking to GIVE ME SPORT, Jones shared another name that is one to watch with more transfers expected at Elland Road in the coming weeks.

“New signing Brenden Aaronson was the long-term primary target and there will be links with other US-based players, with the name of New York City FC’s Valentin Castellanos one to keep an eye on,” he wrote.

“He’s a 23-year-old Argentine forward and already boasts 53 career goals for NYCFC.”

Here we go.

Wow, Leeds are really going into overdrive.

Bringing in Castellanos could be a perfect move for the Whites given how badly things have gone in the final third.

The Argentinian already scoring over 50 goals for New York City shows that he knows where the back of the net is, and an out-and-out finisher is something we have lacked for years.

Patrick Bamford is not reliable enough now after his injury shockers this season, playing only nine games, and having no central option behind him has been a huge concern.

Castellanos coming in would be the perfect answer to that and coming from the MLS, Andrea Radrizzani wouldn’t need to break the bank and the 49ers Enterprises would certainly back it.

Leeds need another goal machine without most likely spending huge amounts, so this is certainly one that we will be keeping an eye on in the coming weeks and months.

‘Ravenous’ – Leeds fans compared to Philadelphia’s as American media reacts to Aaronson signing

American media reacted after Leeds United announced the signing of USMNT player Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday (26 May).

The 21-year-old has signed a five-year-deal that will begin on 1 July, subject to him gaining a work permit, after a deal was reached for around $28million (The Athletic).

Victor Orta spent most of the January transfer window attempting to land the young American but was unsuccessful until now, after the Whites’ Premier League survival was secured on the final day of the season last weekend (22 May).

American media has focused on the step up for one of the stars of their national team, as Aaronson becomes the second-most expensive US player in history after Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, with MLSSoccer.com calling the deal “opulent”.

Stars and Stripes FC considers the step up to the Premier League as a challenge in terms of the attacking midfielder’s development, as he will “take on more challenging opposition” on the pitch and to get in the team, which might affect his chances of being picked internationally.

The fact that his former side Philadephia Union receive a significant sell-on fee of around $5million according to ESPN also gets a mention.

That is particularly the case for one of the team’s local publications, the Philadelphia Inquirer, unsurprisingly, who note that takes the total profit for their former academy player to $14million.

The Inquirer’s assessment of the Whites reputation stands out however, as they say: “The club’s ravenous, us-against-the-world fanbase would look familiar to Philadelphians. So would the fact that Leeds is a one-team city, unlike London, Liverpool, and Manchester.”

Ideal background

Fans in the City of Brotherly Love have a reputation as tough to please but devoted to their teams, and are not overly popular across the rest of the nation.

In that sense the new United man should fit right in at Elland Road, even if the club’s reputation among neutrals has improved hugely thanks to the reign of Marcelo Bielsa.

The focus on the team from across the Atlantic will only increase now that one of their most exciting players has joined Jesse Marsch, who was already a subject of keen attention.

If the American revolution continues, with the 49ers takeover potentially on the horizon, and mooted moves for Barcelona’s Sergino Dest and RB Leipzig’s Tyler Adams tipped to follow, the club’s profile will increase hugely in the US.

The Whites badly needed strengthening and this is a very positive move, even if they have had to wait five months for it.

If he can translate his form in Austria to the England and flourish under Marsch it will go a long way to improving fortunes after a nightmare season.

In other Leeds United news, both the club and one of their star players would apparently accept a major move within the Premier League which fans will be desperate not to happen.

Leeds United told what they must do this summer to avoid another relegation battle

Leeds United have been told they must address their defensive issues this summer if they want to avoid another relegation scrap.

Jesse Marsch’s side secured their spot in the top flight in dramatic fashion on the final day of the season when Jack Harrison scored a late winner against Brentford. Leeds were in a tough position in February after legendary coach Marcelo Bielsa was sacked after a number of poor results, but former RB Leipzig manager Marsch was able to somewhat steady the ship and do just enough to keep the West Yorkshire side in the Premier League.

Leeds conceded a whopping 79 goals in the Premier League – over two goals per game, with only Norwich City, who finished bottom, conceding more. And whilst they were able to remain in the league after scoring more goals than Wolves who finished 10th, TalkSPORT’s Alan Brazil has told Leeds they must sort their defensives issues next season.

He said: “You can’t concede the goals Leeds did this season. It was almost as if they were going out there at times and thinking you score four we will score five and you can’t do that.”

Leeds United have been linked with a number of defenders, including right-back Calvin Ramsey from Aberdeen, and could look at improving their defensive midfielders.

It remains to be seen if Jesse Marsch will change Leeds’ formation next season, with plenty of players expected to leave and join the club prior to August’s start of the season.

Leeds scramble to find ‘resolution’ as major Kalvin Phillips exit updates surface – report

Leeds United are desperate to find a “resolution” over the future of Kalvin Phillips as interest continues to grow over a major summer exit.

Dean Jones has reported that there are now big doubts over a potential new contract, with Manchester City’s interest now a real worry for those at Elland Road.

Andrea Radrizzani was waiting until the end of the season to start contract talks, with Leeds’ Premier League status now secured for another season.

Writing for his latest GIVE ME SPORT piece, Jones shared the latest regarding the Yorkshire Pirlo with everything not as straightforward as it seems right now.

“There is also some doubt over Kalvin Phillips as the club seek a resolution to terms that would see him sign an extended contract,” he said.

“It’s slightly worrying for them that Manchester City are being linked to him, as that is a different level from West Ham or Newcastle.”

Resolution.

Leeds need to make this happen immediately.

Radrizzani and Victor Orta will never be forgiven if they can’t get Phillips to put pen-to-paper on a new contract and extend his stay in West Yorkshire for even longer.

The ball has been in their court for months now, and each time it was shared that all parties would wait until the end of the season to get this done, just in case of relegation.

Now that isn’t the case and we survived, a financial package that makes Phillips the best-paid player at the club has to be placed in front of him and that should be too good to say no.

With Manchester City mentioned, does the Yorkshire Pirlo want to go and sit on the bench, potentially playing 50% of games, or play every single week and become captain of his boyhood club in a couple of years.

The goal has to be European football moving forward, and Phillips has to be made that promise that Leeds will strengthen the squad dramatically around his contract extension.

Find that resolution quickly.
