Report: Newcastle United considering Leeds United raid ahead of 2022/23

Newcastle United are considering a move for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the summer transfer window.

Leeds have full focus on the Premier League run-in and building their way away from the relegation zone.

The same can be said of Leeds’ divisional rivals, Newcastle, who are only two points better off than Jesse Marsch’s side.

Whilst tentative talk at Leeds has been on the summer, it appears that Newcastle’s near full focus has switched to recruitment.

As per a report from The Daily Mail, Newcastle have held in-depth discussion on transfer targets, scanning over a number of positions, including central midfield.

In that report, it claims that Leeds’ Phillips was on the agenda, with a move for the England international under consideration.

Less than GBP60m

Around GBP60m

More than GBP60m

The 26-year-old has played only 12 times in the Premier League this season, missing four months of the campaign due to a hamstring injury.

Phillips will have two years to run on his Leeds contract by the time the summer comes, with reports yesterday suggesting that he’s willing to commit beyond that.

If Leeds can stay up and agree a new contract with Phillips, it’s going to take an enormous bid from Newcastle to get their hands on the England international.

We know that Newcastle’s newfound wealth means money isn’t really a hurdle for them, but if Phillips shows commitment to Leeds by signing on again, it’s going to be hard for the Magpies to convince the 26-year-old to make what is – for now – a sideways move.

A lot, though, is going to depend on how the run-in plays out.

Leeds and Newcastle are in strong positions to kick on in the coming weeks and secure safety. However, there’s also the possibility that they might be pulled back into trouble if they don’t hit the ground running in April.

This story’s picture might change as the fixtures and results roll in.

Marsch faces mirror image in tactical clash as Leeds take on Southampton

Leeds United welcome Southampton to Elland Road on Saturday, looking to take their winning streak to three in the Premier League.

Late winners against Norwich City and Wolves have lifted spirits enormously around Thorp Arch and they now face a team managed by what appears to be Jesse Marsch’s mirror image.

Ralph Hasenhuttl, like Marsch, has previously managed Red Bull Leipzig and his tactical decisions are very similar to that of the Whites’ new boss, as LeedsLive highlights.

Both teams are likely to deploy a 4-2-2-2 on Saturday although you would think that both have a reasonably good idea as to how to beat their own tactic.

One moment

With such similar tactical preferences from both managers, Saturday’s clash at Elland Road is sure to be played at full throttle.

It should be a fantastic watch with both sides looking to win the ball back as quickly as possible likely to lead to a frantic 90 minutes.

However, it is also likely that both sides may counteract each other and there could be something of a stalemate between the two teams.

It might take that one moment of magic from an individual if there is to be a winner in this game and Leeds United have that star quality.

A lot of eyes will be on Raphinha to spark the memorable moment although the likes of Dan James and Jack Harrison could be the surprise heroes on the day.

It might even be a defender who is the star of the day, popping up with a long-range screamer when everyone expected it least.

That is what it will take to win this tactical game of chess that the two remarkably similar managers will be playing on the sidelines.

Significant twist emerges in Barcelona pursuit of Leeds United’s Raphinha

It’s seems there is now a chance that Leeds United winger Raphinha may not be joining Barcelona after all.

That’s after a report from Spanish outlet AS claimed that Ousmane Dembele is now leaning towards signing a new contract with the La Liga giants.

Speculation around a move to Barcelona for Raphinha has been ramping up over the past few weeks, with some reports claiming that the Brazilian has agreed terms on a move to the Camp Nou.

However, it now seems that the 25-year-old’s hopes of a move to Spain could be about to come to an end very quickly indeed.

According to this latest update, Dembele is now more open to extending his stay at Barcelona following his recent success since Xavi took over as manager.

It is thought that if the France international does put pen to paper on a new deal, Barcelona will end their pursuit of Raphinha, since they will no longer need a replacement for Dembele.

Barcelona are also said to be reluctant to spend a big fee on Raphinha, especially if Dembele stays at the club, in which case they would instead look to keep Adama Traore, who is currently on loan from Wolves.

This may be seen as something of a relief for those of a Leeds United persuasion.

Losing Raphinha would be a huge blow given how much of an influence he has had since joining the club, and it does seem as though the Brazilian was rather keen on a move to Barcelona.

But if Dembele is to stay, it makes little sense for Barca to spend a big fee on a player, whose role in the side has already been filled, so you can understand their stance here.

However, even if Barcelona do not make a move for Raphinha in the summer, there are other clubs who could do so, meaning it could still be a nervous market for Leeds with regards to the Brazilian’s future.

Jeff Stelling predicts result of Leeds v Southampton, Sky Sports pundit completely agrees

Jeff Stelling predicts Leeds United to win a third Premier League game in a row when they welcome Southampton to Elland Road on Saturday.

Writing on the Super 6 website, the Gillette Soccer Saturday host said that he expects Jesse Marsch’s side to win 2-1 and further ease their relegation concerns in the Premier League.

Sky Sports pundit Neil Mellor also did his predictions and agreed with Stelling on both the outcome and the scoreline at Elland Road this weekend.

Interestingly, both Stelling and Mellor also predicted defeats for Leeds’ relegation rivals Brentford, Norwich and Burnley.

Easy win?

Leeds have won two in a row, Southampton have lost four in a row.

If you look solely at the form of the two sides then you’d have to back United to get all three points when the Saints are in town this weekend.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are capable of stringing together a run of good performances but they can also go the other way and really struggle.

As for Leeds, it’s all looking positive for them right now with key players returning from injury and two last-minute winners on the bounce.

Joe Gelhardt’s goal versus Norwich and Luke Ayling’s winner at Wolves are monumental goals for the Whites this season.

They could end up defining the campaign and being what ultimately keeps the Yorkshire giants in the Premier League.

But let’s take nothing away from Marsch and the job he’s done so far because we’re performing well and we’re picking up points.

Win this against Southampton, and we think we can start to look ahead, rather than behind, in the Premier League table.

Billionaire-backed PL club ready to sell star to free space to sign Leeds player – report

Aston Villa are set to sell midfielder Douglas Luiz in the summer to clear space for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, according to the Daily Mail.

Villans manager Steven Gerrard has reportedly made a holding midfielder his priority, and the Whites’ England star is known to be a prime target.

The Birmingham side have spent heavily this season and The Mail says billionaire owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens will back their manager again in a bid to “bridge the gap to the Premier League elite”.

Brazilian Luiz has featured 25 times in the league this season, including 18 appearances since Gerrard arrived from Rangers, but is set to be the odd man out as the former Liverpool captain looks to strengthen his midfield.

While The Mail report says that Villa expect a deal for Phillips to be “complicated”, it was recently reported by The Times that they were prepared to offer £60million and an “enormous salary” to make it happen.

Contract crucial

Talk keeps heating up around major money taking the 26-year-old away from Elland Road.

It isn’t going to stop unless the club get the new contract he reportedly wants signed and sealed.

An improved deal has been in the offing since at least the end of the January transfer window, after an offer from West Ham was reportedly turned down.

But as of yet there has been nothing official in terms of securing the boyhood United fan’s future at the club.

The relegation battle has understandably taken centre stage, and the upheaval of changing managers was a big focus.

But while talks have been taking place with the Whites’ other star man tipped for a big-money transfer, Raphinha, there doesn’t seem to have been the same level of activity with Phillips.

It should be far more straightforward, with the player expected to be happy to stay on the right terms.

So Victor Orta needs to get it sewn up as a priority to head off the risk of a massive offer turning his head in the summer.

In other Leeds United news, an ex-Whites hero has blasted two of the club’s current crop as he expects activity in the summer.

‘Going to get ridiculed…’ – Jamie Carragher blown away by what he saw Leeds man do recently

Jamie Carragher believes that Jesse Marsch will manage to keep Leeds United in the Premier League this season.

He was impressed with the team talk the American conducted on the pitch after the Leicester.

It reminded of when Marsch’s Leipzig side visited Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Champions League.

Discussing this on Sky Sports Overlap, Carragher said, “I like him, he comes across as someone who’s got real, big energy. He’s going to get ridiculed because he’s American.

“He’s got a real energy about him. The thing he did at Leicester, after the game, is the sort of stuff that people really like.

“I liked the team talk he did, it was on the TV at Liverpool. Haaland was in his team, I think they’ll stay up.”

New culture

Nobody will be talking about the American thing once Marsch starts getting results on the board.

Thus far, he is still viewed as an outsider so will need to keep winning games to silence his critics.

The job for this season will be to keep the Whites in the Premier League and their last two games will give them plenty of confidence.

Hopefully, they can carry that going into the games after the international break.

Three more wins should be enough to retain their Premier League status and they must aim to achieve that.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are leading the race to complete a major signing and have already opened talks to seal a £25m deal.

£25k-a-wk+ Leeds player in crunch talks with Andrea Radrizzani as demand made – report

Kalvin Phillips has told Andrea Radrizzani he wants a new contract at Leeds United in the summer, according to The Mirror.

The newspaper reported via their print edition on 31 March [page 57] that Phillips, 26, started talks with the Whites last month but they’ve been put on hold due to the club’s fight against relegation from the Premier League.

It is understood that Phillips’ decision to change his agent in the summer has also led to negotiations slowing down.

Phillips, who reportedly earns over £25,000-a-week on his current deal at Elland Road, will enter the final two years of his contract in the summer unless a new one is agreed soon.

The Mirror adds that Leeds want to give the England international a pay rise.

Get it done

While there’s plenty of speculation surrounding Raphinha’s future at Leeds with it looking as though he’s going to be on his way to Barcelona, we’re growing more confident of Phillips staying.

Leeds won’t want to sell their two best players in the summer transfer window and Phillips’ eagerness to sign a new deal suggests that he doesn’t want to go anywhere either.

It’s been a frustrating season for the Yorkshire Pirlo, who’ll have no doubt found it hard sitting on the sidelines and watching his team do badly most weeks.

Leeds struggle without Phillips and Phillips has no doubt struggled without Leeds as his spot in the England World Cup squad may have come under threat this season.

Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher and Jordan Henderson could all be seen as above Phillips in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order in the centre of the midfield.

Phillips was obviously amazing at the European Championships last year and we know what he’s capable so he should be in the squad in Qatar later this year.

But will he be a starter? He needs to prove his fitness and form first.

In other Leeds United news, Victor Orta has hit out at Fabrizio Romano and shared a big update on Raphinha’s future.

Leeds United man handed fresh international hope after recent frustrations

It seems Patrick Bamford’s of forcing his way back into the England squad may not be over just yet.

That’s after Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate name-checked the Leeds United striker as potential cover for Harry Kane moving forward.

Following an excellent 2020/21 campaign in which he scored 17 goals on Leeds’ return to the Premier League, Bamford had become impossible to ignore for England.

That saw him handed his first call-up last September, where he would win his first senior international cap in a win over Andorra.

Since then however, the striker has been blighted by a string of injury issues that have meant he has barely played for Leeds, let alone add to his one England appearance.

But despite that, it seems Southgate has not forgotten about the striker as a potential option for his future England squads.

Speaking about the attacking options he has behind Harry Kane in the wake of his side’s 3-0 friendly win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday, Southgate was quoted by Leeds Live as saying: “We have got Ollie [Watkins] with us this time. Also we need to find out a bit more about our centre forwards and what those options might look like beyond Harry Kane.

“At the moment I’d have to say that’s wide open. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had an excellent couple of games for us in October 2020, but hasn’t established himself this season.

Patrick Bamford has had a season full of injury. Tammy [Abraham] has had a very good season for goalscoring and it’s disappointing not to have him with us to see.”

This does feel promising from Bamford’s perspective.

Injuries mean the Leeds man has had very few opportunities to impress Southgate and the England selection committee this season.

As a result, the fact that Southgate is still mentioning him here, suggests that Bamford has previously left a positive enough impression on the England set-up to be considered for the future, if he can get back to fitness.

Indeed, the World Cup being pushed back to winter could be good for Bamford. With the striker out for much if not all of the rest of the season, he would have almost no chance to force his way into the squad for a summer tournament.

However, with it being in winter, the first half of next season could give the striker a real chance to earn that spot, especially given he is clearly still on Southgate’s mind.

Victor Orta reveals Raphinha’s first wish following 2020 Leeds United signing as exit talk intensifies

Victor Orta has stated that Raphinha mentioned his goals of the Qatar World Cup when he first joined Leeds United back in 2020.

The Whites are fighting to stay in the Premier League this season, with Raphinha’s nine goals so far a huge help as they sit seven points clear of the drop.

It has seen talk of an exit build since January, with fans feeling like it’s inevitable that a move is on the cards for the winger.

Raphinha is in his second Premier League season after sealing a bargain GBP17million move from Rennes back on deadline day in summer 2020.

His form since then has shown just how good a deal Leeds got, with the winger now going on to becoming a key figure in the Brazil side as they prepare for the World Cup in Qatar.

He might not be flying the Leeds flag for Brazil in Qatar, with Barcelona’s interest growing seemingly by the day in him, but his development at Elland Road is what has seen him earn his spot in Tite’s squad.

GBP30-40million

GBP40-50million

GBP50-60million

More than GBP60million

Now, Victor Orta has revealed that this was an overall aim for Raphinha when he joined Leeds, as he had this to say to Marca on his arrival:

“On August 29, I received a call that Rennes puts Raphinha on sale. At 9 in the morning, I was in the barbershop I remember perfectly and at 11 they had an offer of 15 million that we went up to 17.

“The 30th plays, scores, takes a private flight and the 31st signs at Leeds. They signed Doku, the Belgian boy. The player walked through the door of Leeds United and said, ‘You will invite me to the World Cup in Qatar, won’t you?’, and he was left with a foolish face, he didn’t believe it.

“And now we have been meeting those objectives. Now he knows that Leeds and his coaching staff, who have collaborated a lot, have helped his figure grow and has responded to us with a lot of quality and being a differential player in the league.

“He has to remain the same and then when summer arrives, when the time comes, there will be time for everything.”

Mission accomplished.

It was quite clear from Raphinha’s first touches in a Leeds shirt that he was destined for the very top.

He’s been outstanding since he signed and despite a dip in form in 2022, he’s still no doubt a top class winger.

If he keeps us in the Premier League this season, then I don’t think anyone will begrudge him a move to Barcelona in the summer.

He’s been a tremendous servant to us, and his own hard work has earned him that spot in the Brazil squad, and I look forward to seeing him in the World Cup.

Sky Sports moot double major British transfer raid from Leeds, clubs could cash in

Sky Sports have been looking at major transfers that could happen this summer, and Leeds United are heavily involved.

Some of the biggest names have been included, with the likes of Neymar under the microscope for a potential move.

Leeds have been mooted for a couple of big attacking moves to improve in the final third, likely to fill the potential void left by Raphinha.

The first name is a familiar target around Elland Road, with Rangers’ winger Ryan Kent potentially available.

Kent is approaching the final year of his deal, and a move could be forced this summer to avoid losing him for nothing.

The second is Blackburn’s Ben Brereton-Diaz, with his contract running out this summer, although there is an option for another year.

If that doesn’t materialise, the Chilean international could also be another player who is cashed in on by his current club.

Perfect.

This would be a brilliant way to start the summer window and Jesse Marsch’s first transfer period in charge of the club.

With Raphinha potentially leaving and Patrick Bamford suffering constant injuries, Kent and Brereton-Diaz would provide exceptional depth.

On top of that, Leeds wouldn’t need to pay over the odds with both players entering the final years of their current deals.

Marsch will surely want Victor Orta to improve his squad depth, and with RB Salzburg star Brenden Aaronson also high on the list, those three deals could create an arsenal of weapons in the final third.

Bringing players in from the Championship and Scotland has worked massively for Premier League clubs in recent years with Jarrod Bowen and Kieran Tierney to name just two.

Jumping on that bandwagon would give Leeds two perfect options, with one of these shining on the international stage, and the other a standout on European nights for his club.

Make it happen.

‘Huge’ – Pundit sets Leeds challenge ahead of showdown v Southampton

Relegation is still not completely out of the question for Leeds United and Saturday’s game against Southampton could be key to survival.

The Whites are currently seven points clear of the drop in 16th in the Premier League but despite the small number of games left to play, they have to be on their toes to avoid being dragged back towards the mire.

Tony Dorigo sees this weekend’s game against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints as another huge test for Leeds.

“I look at this game in a similar way to the one against Newcastle in that, at that point in the season, if we had beaten them at home, we would have created a real buffer between us and the drop zone and looked fine,” Dorigo said in his Yorkshire Evening Post column.

“It’s similar now. If we can beat Southampton, that buffer becomes that much bigger and the tension you play under lessens. Newcastle were fighting for their lives; Southampton are slightly different but they’re more than a decent side as their position shows.

“It’s another huge game but, at home, it’s one we can win. No doubt everyone understands the enormity of it.”

One more win

Leeds could be on the brink of securing their safety come five o’clock on Saturday.

If the Whites can manage to win a third straight game in the Premier League against the Saints, they will have almost certainly put themselves beyond the reach of the chasing pack bar a remarkable upturn in form for one of the bottom three.

Jesse Marsch has found a way to win in the Premier League that previous manager Marcelo Bielsa had lost by the end of his tenure at Elland Road and the good feelings are flowing once more.

Southampton have enjoyed a very good season themselves and it will be by no means a simple task for the Whites but if anyone can find a way to win against all odds, it’s Leeds United.

In other Leeds United news, these European giants are willing to pay £42million to sign one of Marsch’s key players but there is a stumbling block in play.

Journalist offers significant update on Patrick Bamford’s fitness situation at Leeds United

It seems Patrick Bamford’s season with Leeds United may not be over just yet.

That’s after The Daily Mirror reported that the striker could yet feature in the final three games of this season.

Bamford has endured a miserable season due to injury, managing just nine appearances since the start of the season.

The striker suffered yet another setback in Leeds’ final game before the international break, when he was forced off 20 minutes into the win over Wolves.

It was then revealed by the club that the injury the striker suffered at Molineux, is a foot injury that will keep him out until the end of the season.

Now however, it seems that may not be the case, with this latest update claiming that Leeds are hopeful Bamford could still feature for them in the final three games of the campaign.

It is thought that when Rodrigo and Pascal Struijk suffered that injury, they were able to return in between four to five weeks, and if Bamford is the same, he may be able to return before the season is over.

Those final three games of the season for Leeds see them travel to Arsenal, before hosting Brighton and then finishing the campaign away at Brentford.

It would certainly be a huge boost to Leeds if they were to have Bamford available for those games.

The striker has been a big miss for the Whites throughout much of the campaign, and the absence of his goals has significantly contributed to their struggles.

As a result, his potential return to action for those final few games could prove crucial, given he could yet come up with some vital goals that keep Leeds out of trouble.

However, given how badly he has been hit by injuries this season, the club will surely have to be careful not to push him too far here, since they need to consider the long term prosepcts, as well as the short term ones.

‘It was right…’ – Gabby Agbonlahor drops Leeds player view after major Tuesday controversy

Gabby Agbonlahor has used Leeds United star, Kalvin Phillips, as an example to show why Gareth Southgate is doing a good job with England.

Southgate was left raging after his selection of Harry Maguire was heavily booed in the 3-0 win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday evening.

Agbonlahor used Southgate picking Phillips while in the Championship was a brilliant example of how he was getting things right.

Speaking live on talkSPORT this morning [30 March, 8:15 am], Agbonlahor surprisingly backed the Yorkshire Pirlo.

“He played Kalvin Phillips when he was in the Championship and it was right,” he said.

“He has the power to do what he wants.”

Star.

Picking Phillips may have been seen as a major risk to outsiders at the time, but Leeds fans knew it was easily earned.

Look what happened after that – the Yorkshire Pirlo was voted as England’s Player of the Year after his maiden 12 months with his country.

Southgate has had his critics, but even we know those boo-boys of Maguire were ridiculous last night and is coming from a Leeds fan.

You have to back your county, and doing that before games have even started is ludicrous, we don’t do that to the likes of Phillips.

Phillips is the perfect example of what brilliant support can do, he has it from all corners at Elland Road and it has catapulted him to the top.

When even Agbonlahor is questioning something, you know that it must be big, and we have to agree with his perfect example here.

£10m bid would ‘almost certainly’ be enough for Leeds to seal midfield transfer – report

Leeds United have received a boost in their hopes of signing Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes as a substantial bid would be accepted, according to Wales Online.

The Whites are keen on signing the 23-year-old in the summer with the central midfielder area being the main focus for Jesse Marsch ahead of his first transfer window at Elland Road.

Kieron Dyer believes the England under-20 international could be worth £10million to the right bidder [Ipswich Star] and Leeds would have the money to pay that if they needed to.

Wales Online now report that “Should an offer of that magnitude arrive for Downes, Swansea will almost certainly accept it. Downes is key to how Martin wants to play but finances, as ever, would dictate that decision.”

Better options

As well as Downes has been playing for Russell Martin’s Swansea this season, he probably isn’t the player most fans were hoping would arrive during the next transfer window.

Especially if the Swans demand £10million as Dyer suggests they should, Victor Orta needs to be strong enough to walk away and focus his attention elsewhere.

James Garner is an option as he is currently shining in the Championship promotion race for Nottingham Forest and Brenden Aaronson has long been linked with a move to Elland Road.

Both of these players are younger than Downes and arguably better too so why the club would pursue the 23-year-old is anybody’s guess.

If the Swansea man had been a teenager and performing like he is in the second division, then maybe there could be an argument as to why you’d choose him over Garner or Aaronson but surely he has to be a last resort if the club fails in their attempts to sign the others.

In other Leeds United news, we think the perfect Patrick Bamford replacement is already at Thorp Arch and needs to be given his chance.

MOT View: Perfect Bamford replacement must get Leeds chance, Beckford approves

Another injury setback is the last thing Patrick Bamford or Leeds United wanted but that’s what is facing Jesse Marsch for the immediate future.

The England international limped off during the Whites’ epic 3-2 win away at Wolves prior to the international break and now he appears set to miss a handful of games towards the end of the season.

Marsch won’t be grinning from ear to ear with the news given how prolific Bamford has proved to be in the Premier League for Leeds but this does give him the opportunity to hand a chance to one of the youngsters making waves at Thorp Arch.

Attacker Sam Greenwood, 20, replaced Bamford at Molineux and he needs to do so again when the Whites welcome Southampton to Elland Road on Saturday.

Not only has he starred for the club’s youth teams in recent seasons but he is also taking his talents onto the international stage.

Greenwood scored his first goal for England Under-20s last night, according to LUFC Youth Academy on Twitter, in a 3-1 win against Germany.

Former Whites hero Jermaine Beckford replied to the aforementioned tweet with clapping emojis as he wallowed in the glory of the 20-year-old.

He does have tough competition from Gelhardt when it comes to the striker position but with Marsch operating a front two rather than the lone wolf of Marcelo Bielsa, maybe both players could start against the Saints.

It would be a massive gamble to make, especially with relegation not totally out of the question just yet, but maybe one that would reap huge benefits for the club in the long run.

A front two of homegrown players sounds like a dream and Leeds could be close to making that a reality in the future.

Euro giants ready to pay £42m for Leeds player, major stumbling block detailed – report

Barcelona are keen to sign Leeds United winger Raphinha, but there is a big stumbling block.

According to the Catalan based newspaper Sport (printed edition, 30 March – page 13), the La Liga giants are interested in signing the Brazilian but they can only pay up to £42 million for him.

They are only willing to offer an upfront payment of £33 million, while the rest of the money will be added as incentives.

If Leeds stay in the Premier League, Barcelona have no intention to enter into a bidding war, and this is the maximum they can offer.

Sport suggest that Barcelona want to see Raphinha joining them in the summer, but they fear that negotiating with the Yorkshire club would be difficult.

However, if Leeds suffer relegation, there’s no point in negotiation as Barcelona can sign him for £25 million.

No clause

The Catalan media are confident that the Brazilian has already agreed to personal terms [Sport] to join the La Liga club.

Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that there’s a £63.4million (€75million) buy-out clause in the Brazil international’s deal.

However, Victor Orta has made it clear (Mundo Deportivo) that the winger doesn’t have such a clause in his contract if he stays in the Premier League.

According to a recent report from 90 Min, Leeds are planning to offer Raphinha a new deal once they secure Premier League safety.

The Brazilian has shown no signs of agitation about leaving the club, rather he is reportedly focused on the task ahead.

While wild rumours are going around on a daily basis, we can safely say that it would be impossible for Barcelona to sign Raphinha if Leeds stay up.

Leeds United receive transfer boost as eight-figure price tag emerges

Brenden Aaronson wants to leave RB Salzburg, with Leeds United said to be favourites to sign the midfielder in the summer.

Leeds wanted Aaronson back in the January transfer window and saw bids rejected by Salzburg.

The highest of those bids was a reported GBP20m, yet Leeds were met by a stern negotiator in the Austrian club.

Despite missing out on Aaronson in January, Leeds’ interest has not fallen away.

As per Florian Plettenberg, the 21-year-old wants to leave Salzburg in the summer transfer window and Leeds are favourites to sign the midfielder.

If Leeds are to get a deal done, though, it’s going to cost them a substantial fee.

The price tag is between EUR25-30m, with no release clause in Aaronson’s current deal.

1 of 15

In what year was Jesse Marsch born?

It seems that Leeds weren’t a million miles off Salzburg’s asking price for Aaronson in January, so you wouldn’t expect figures to be an issue sorting out a deal in the summer window.

With Aaronson keen to leave and Leeds now under the management of Jesse Marsch, a former coach of Aaronson, you’d think that suggestions that they are in the driving seat to sign the midfielder are accurate.

Perhaps one of the only things working against Leeds getting the wheels back in motion earlier than the summer window is the fact that they don’t know what division they will be in next season.

Leeds are still flirting with the possibility of relegation, but know a couple of wins will see them planning for next season in the Premier League.

That’s when they can truly press on with agreeing a fee for Aaronson.

Early Southampton injury news for Leeds United trip as Saints close to full strength

Leeds United return after the international break with another big match in their battle to avoid the drop as they host Southampton at Elland Road. The Whites will be looking to make it three wins in a row for the first time since the end of last season and extend their seven-point buffer on the bottom three.

It will be the second time this campaign that Leeds are set to face the Saints immediately after the international break. It was a very disappointing afternoon at St. Mary’s for Leeds as they failed to register a single shot in target in a 1-0 defeat.

Southampton, though, enter the clash with Leeds on the back of a poor run of form – losing each of their last four matches in all competitions, including three in the league. It has been a good season on the whole for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side despite their recent form, sitting comfortably in mid-table.

Ahead of Saturday’s meeting, here is an early look at Southampton’s injury news.

Lyanco – hamstring

Brazilian centre back Lyanco will be absent for the trip to Elland Road as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. The 25-year-old has not featured since a 1-1 draw with Manchester City back in January, but this game is still likely to come too soon.

What Hasenhuttl’s said (Feb 08): “Lyanco is definitely out for 8-12 weeks, hopefully not too long. It’s the same injury as Jack Stephens had a few weeks ago so this is more serious.

Alex McCarthy – thigh

It is coming up to four months now since goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was last fit for the Saints, in a 1-1 draw with Brighton back in early December. Hasenhuttl has not provided a fresh update on his condition since the beginning of February, when he confirmed he had suffered a setback in training.

What Hasenhuttl’s said (Feb 03): “Suffered a setback in training. We don’t know 100% [how serious it is] at the moment. It takes a couple of weeks before we know more.”

Barcelona president names Leeds United’s Raphinha as contact confirmed with player’s agent

Raphinha has been courted by several members of European football’s elite whilst representing Leeds United. Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Barcelona are among those with membership to the Champions League cabal who have reportedly expressed an interest in the wide-forward on the back of performances at Elland Road this season.

Late last year, reports in Brazil suggested a deal had been agreed with Bayern Munich over a January transfer but those claims proved to be unfounded, while Chelsea have reportedly held a passing interest. More recently, Barcelona have emerged as firm favourites to secure the Brazilian’s signature this summer.

Raphinha’s agent Deco is a former Barcelona player, having won the Champions League with the Catalan club in 2006. It has now been suggested by Los Cules’ President Joan Laporta that the Leeds talisman’s agent is in contact with Barcelona. Speaking to radio station RAC1 on March 28, Laporta mentioned Raphinha by name when discussing summer transfer business.

READ MORE: Leeds United uncertainty amid Raphinha transfer interest can earn club extra EUR50 million

“We have two signings lined up, maybe a centre-back and a midfielder, yes. It could be a central defender and a midfielder, yes,” Laporta said, discussing players Barcelona were confident would be signed on free transfers at the expiry of their contracts this summer. The 59-year-old did however refuse to name those individuals involved in such deals. Laporta went on to name-check Raphinha, though, indicating a deal is not yet in place, as has been previously implied.

“Raphinha, on the other hand, is a great player. We have good reports on him. Deco has his job and informs us of details so we don’t make mistakes. And in some cases he has helped us a lot,” the Barcelona chief added. Laporta’s unprompted reference to the Leeds United winger all but confirms the LaLiga giants’ interest in the player. Sport claimed last week that personal terms had been agreed between Raphinha’s representatives and Barcelona, but an agreement was yet to be reached between the two clubs over a transfer.

Barcelona president Laporta gives latest update on Leeds star Raphinha’s reported move

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has shared the latest details regarding Leeds United ace Raphinha’s reported move.

The Brazilian has agreed on a five-year deal with the Catalonian giants as reported by Spanish news outlet, Sport.

Fabrizio Romano shared the latest update on Twitter as Laporta shed light on the “good relationships” with Raphinha and his agent Deco.

He told RAC1 via Fabrizio Romano: “Raphinha is a player we really like and it’s true that Deco’s his agent. We’ve very good relationships.

“I want to clarify that Deco’s not paid by the club. He will just help us because he dominates the Brazilian market.”

Break the bank

It will be devastating for the Whites to lose their best player over the last couple of seasons.

Leeds desperately have to stay in the Premier League if they want to be paid a fee worthwhile for the 25-year-old.

Romano reported that if Jesse Marsch leads the team to relegation then Raphinha could exit for as little as £25million but if they remain in the topflight that price could rise to £75million.

Leeds; chiefs will certainly hold out for as much money as possible for this deal and despite losing a top-quality player there is a silver lining.

That money can be reinvested back into the squad and it could do with some fresh faces.

There is no doubt Rahpinha will be right at home at Barca. He is a classy player who will be greatly missed at Elland Road.

Is this the end of the Marcelo Bielsa era coming to fruition? Hopefully, the Whites can hold onto their other crucial players in what might be a very difficult summer transfer window as clubs circle.

Doctor gives expert view on Leeds ace injury problems, tells fans what to expect

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford will likely be in a protective boot for a while after being ruled out for a minimum of six weeks with a foot injury, according to a doctor.

Bamford was forced off with plantar fascitis against Wolves, having missed a large chunk of the season dealing with that and other fitness problems.

Now Leeds-Live have spoken to a doctor about what fans can expect to see during the period of recovery, who believes now is a chance to allow the 28-year-old to fully recover instead of pushing through the problem.

“He’ll likely be in a protective boot to allow it to heal and then into physio,” Dr Rajpal Brar said.

“[The ruptured plantar fascia] may now allow him the proper time to recover because he can’t push through it [the partial tear].

“The key is to determine the true root causes of the issue since it’s been bothering him for a while now.”

No more pain

Bamford is likely to miss the rest of the season but there is said to be a slim chance that he could return for the final couple of games of the season.

If that’s the case though it should only be if he is completely, 100 per cent fit and with no risk surrounding whether the issue will re-emerge quickly again.

At this point the club and Jesse Marsch should simply plan to be without him for the rest of the season. As good as he is, the greatest ability is availability.

If he’s not completely fit then he’s likely to do more harm than good and Leeds are in a position right now where they need as many points as possible.

It’s possible that relegation is sealed one way or another before the final few games of the campaign, but that’s even more reason to allow him to rest and recover.

We saw how important he is to the team in his absence this season, so the club must ensure he’s ready and raring to go next year no matter what.

Leeds United’s silver lining to Patrick Bamford injury revealed as expert predicts next move

Last season, Patrick Bamford scored 17 Premier League goals, making an appearance in all 38 of Leeds United’s league matches on their triumphant return to the top flight. The 28-year-old was instrumental in Leeds’ top half finish, earning an England call-up last September following his stellar form. This season, Bamford will struggle to make 17 appearances throughout the entire campaign, due to a succession of injuries.

His latest ailment is a ruptured plantar fascia, an injury which has plagued him for 12 months, according to Leeds United’s Head of Medicine and Performance Rob Price. It affects mobility, generating a sharp pain in the sole of the foot, but had been manageable for the majority of the past year until a partial tear developed into a full rupture against Wolverhampton Wanderers eleven days ago.

A club statement released on Sunday evening stated Bamford will spend a ‘minimum of six weeks’ on the sidelines as medical staff seek to put an end to the lingering issue: “As all sports medics know, injuries to the plantar fascia are notoriously difficult to manage, but all concerned are confident that he will make a full recovery from this injury in good time,” Price said. “Patrick has been incredibly unlucky this year, his game time has been limited by different injuries including an ankle injury sustained at Newcastle and hamstring and quad injuries once back in training and matchday squads.”

READ MORE: Jesse Marsch’s Brenden Aaronson stance among five questions Leeds United boss is yet to answer

Rob Price and the medical team’s next move will be determining the cause of Bamford’s plantar fasciitis: “What he needs is a period of rest and rehabilitation to allow his body to fully recover,” Price added.

Doctor of Physical Therapy Rajpal Brar, owner of 3CB Performance, suggests that a six-week recovery timeline is appropriate for the type of injury Bamford has sustained: “He’ll likely be in a protective boot to allow it to heal and then into physio,” Dr Brar told LeedsLive.

“[The ruptured plantar fascia] may now allow him the proper time to recover because he can’t push through it [the partial tear],” Dr Brar added, whilst conceding a rupture was a ‘more severe’ issue than a tear.

Dr Brar suggested the six-week ‘downtime’ Bamford will now have to determine the ‘root causes’ of his injury could be a silver lining to prevent future flare-ups. This is instead of repeated pain management and careful monitoring of a lesser injury such as the partial tear which Bamford has been playing with for the past 12 months.

“The key is to determine the true root causes of the issue since it’s been bothering him for a while now,” Dr Brar finished. Bamford’s six-week timeline means he is likely to miss Leeds’ next five matches, possibly making a return at home to Brighton and Hove Albion in mid-May. Assuming he does not feature from the start on his return from injury against the Seagulls, Bamford may only have the opportunity to start one more fixture this season – away to Brentford on the final day.

Pundit View: Leeds ‘Better Off Selling’ star amid major news in last 24hrs before value crashes

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson is concerned that if Leeds United don’t sell Raphinha this summer, the winger’s value will start to drop.

Raphinha, 25, has been one of Leeds’ stand-out players this term but the Brazil winger’s form has notably dropped in the last two months.

Amid his worrying performances, the ex-Rennes ace has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona and Sport reported yesterday [27 March] that he’s even agreed personal terms with the La Liga club.

Robinson would rather Leeds sold Raphinha now while his value is maximised rather than taking a chance on keeping him and seeing that price tag plummet due to poor form.

“Raphinha certainly hasn’t hit the heights of last season this season and I don’t think he would next season if he stayed on,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

If he continues being inconsistent the way he has been, his price tag might not stay the same.

Yes, he is one of the best players at Leeds and he’s a top talent. But I think now might be the time to sell him and put the money back into the squad so you can get players with a different attitude and mentality.

Raphinha’s a luxury player but I think Leeds will be better off selling him, getting the money and signing three or four quality players. You wouldn’t want to lose Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips in the same window.

If you can keep Phillips and then use the money from Raphinha to put back into the squad, it wouldn’t be a bad bit of business in my eyes.”

Raphinha is Leeds’ top goalscorer this season with nine goals in 27 Premier League appearances.

He missed the last game before the international break due to an illness but has since returned to training.

‘Feel for him’ – Sky Sports host reacts to major Leeds player news from last night

David Prutton has predicted Leeds United talisman Patrick Bamford to come back “fitter and stronger” despite massively struggling to stay fit this season.

The England international has been plagued with injuries which have seen him feature in the Premier League only nine times for the Whites – having a hand in four goals along the way.

On Sunday night [27 March], it was confirmed that Bamford will miss six weeks with his latest foot injury.

Former Leeds player and Sky Sports host Prutton expressed his concern for the striker but claimed he has the right character to make a strong comeback.

Prutton wrote in his Yorkshire Evening Post column: “You had to feel for him. It’s been one of those seasons for Patrick which footballers sometimes, unfortunately, have to get their head around.

“Hopefully, he looks at this situation and is able to see the broader picture – times are tough, but this is part of his footballing career.

“Good seasons, bad seasons, indifferent spells and prolific spells all make up the tapestry of what your career ends up being and Patrick doesn’t strike me as a kid that is afraid of hard work.

“If he’s got to draw on reserves of strength and character then the young man that I have come across is resilient and a player that you would count on to come back fitter and stronger.

“It’s just about getting over that hurdle of a run of games and that’s a real key thing when you have been injured.”

Made of glass

Bamford will be back stronger, there is no doubt about that. Being out injured for virtually the whole season wouldn’t have been easy for the forward but it will give him that fire in his belly upon his return.

He has already shown several times this season how eager he is to make his return and help the team. Maybe too eager with the injuries reoccurring almost every time he makes his return to action.

He has been a big miss this season and if he had been fit enough to string a run of games together and build some momentum you would expect Leeds to be much further away from the relegation zone than they currently are.

Jesse Marsch will be very keen to get Bamford back into the fold properly before the end of the season. Not only would he help them secure Premier League safety, but it is vital he understands the American’s style a bit better going into next season.

With that being said the 28-year-old is made of glass this term so the Whites need to be overly careful with their treatment of their key man before another surprise injury keeps him out for any longer.

Leeds confirm one-sentence Raphinha update after rumours earlier in March

Leeds United have confirmed in an official announcement that Raphinha will be available to play against Southampton on Saturday [2 April].

In an update on their official website on Sunday night [27 March], the Whites confirmed that the 25-year-old winger has “joined in training after recovering from illness”.

Raphinha missed the 3-2 win at Wolves prior to the current international break. As quoted by LeedsLive after appearing on Sky Sports, Jesse Marsch confirmed a positive COVID test for the Brazilian after rumours circulated on Twitter.

Straight back into the team?

Leeds managed to win 3-2 against Wolves at Molineux without Raphinha.

However, that doesn’t mean that the Brazilian should be left out of the starting line-up when Jesse Marsch names his squad to take on Southampton at Elland Road this weekend.

Let’s face it, we would not have won that game if Raul Jimenez wasn’t sent off for Wolves.

We were 2-0 down at half-time and really not playing well. That controversial red card changed the game massively.

Raphinha is our best player and our top goalscorer this term with nine goals in the Premier League. And with Patrick Bamford possibly missing the rest of the season, Marsch has to lean on Raphinha even more than he would have hoped.

Unfortunately, the exit-linked Brazilian hasn’t been at his best for a couple of months so he’ll need to get himself back to his best if he wants to get back in the starting line-up and stay there between now and the end of the campaign.

But, still, we know what Raphinha is capable and we’d be shocked if he isn’t in the starting line-up when the Saints are in town this weekend.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has shared a major update on Raphinha’s potential move to Barcelona after Victor Orta’s meetings with Deco.

Impressive statistic that suggests Jesse Marsch is on the right track at Leeds United

Leeds United have won two and lost two of their opening four matches under Jesse Marsch. Marsch is coming up to almost a month in charge following his appointment at the end of February, taking over from the big shoes of Marcelo Bielsa, who enjoyed a great deal of success at Elland Road.

It has been a little Jekyll and Hyde so far under Marsch, though one particular statistic suggests that it is clicking well for Leeds in attack. The Whites are averaging an xG (expected goals) tally of 2.07 per game in Marsch’s four matches in charge, the most of any side in the Premier League.

xG is a metric that measures the quality of a goalscoring opportunity – the higher it is implies that a team is creating a higher volume of good chances. And Aston Villa aside, where they registered just one shot on target, Leeds have looked impressive in attack.

READ MORE: A 20-year Marcelo Bielsa record could fall on Wednesday thanks to the efforts of Raphinha

In the first match under Marsch at Leicester City, Leeds were very unfortunate to come away with nothing in a 1-0 defeat, with a top quality performance from Kasper Schmeichel the difference between no points and three. Against Norwich City, too, Leeds left it late thanks to a goal from Joe Gelhardt, but could’ve been out of sight before Kenny McLean’s equaliser with Raphinha twice hitting the woodwork.

Leeds also struck the post on two occasions in the 3-2 win at Wolves, though the volume of chances created by the Whites following Raul Jimenez’s red card, meant they did enough to win the game. That certainly bodes well for Marsch, as when all of his key players come back into the side, Leeds may begin to climb the table.

Assessing each of Leeds United’s loanees seasons so far and whether they have Elland Road future

Leeds United made heavy use of the loan market with their fringe players last summer as 10 players departed in search of regular game time. Players such as Helder Costa and Kiko Casilla, who were regulars in the promotion season, earned moves to La Liga, while youngsters such as Alfie McCalmont and Ryan Edmondson made moves to the Football League to gain valuable senior experience.

It is fair to say that it has been a relatively mixed bag in terms of the success of each of the loans, with some playing far more football than others. So with that in mind, here is an assessment of each of their season’s so far and whether they have done enough to stake a claim for a place in Leeds’ squad next season.

Helder Costa – Valencia

It has been another very frustrating season on the field for Helder Costa, who has much found himself in and out of the side at Valencia. The 28-year-old struggled for game time early on but between October and the new year, enjoyed a strong run of 10 starts in 11 matches.

READ MORE: Gary Kelly’s former teammate recalls brilliant story of Leeds United hero’s generosity

However, following the January addition of Bryan Gil, Costa has found minutes extremely hard to come by, with his last start coming almost four months ago. His return of zero goals and one assist means Leeds will probably attempt to shift him permanently this summer.

Ian Poveda – Blackburn Rovers

Ian Poveda went out on loan to Blackburn Rovers in the Championship with the aim of proving he has what it takes to cope with the demands of senior football. And he had very much started to do that until he suffered a serious ankle injury at the worst possible time.

Poveda had just scored his first professional goal in a man of the match performance against Sheffield United, before just a week later his season was brought to a halt. The 22-year-old is still recovering from that injury now and the likelihood is he will need another loan in the Championship to prove himself.

Kiko Casilla – Elche

After falling behind Illan Meslier in the pecking order, Kiko Casilla made the move to La Liga side Elche in search of regular game time. And that is what he had until the end of October, as he has not started a single match since.

The 35-year-old has found himself on the bench every week and given how it’s gone, it’s hard to see Elche signing him permanently. Casilla will still have another year left to run on his Leeds deal at the end of the season, however a parting of ways is the likely outcome here.

Leif Davis – Bournemouth

Leif Davis has arguably been the unluckiest of all Leeds’ loanees this season, as only the excellent form of Bournemouth’s Jordan Zemura has prevented him from earning regular game time. Davis has impressed whenever he has been given the chance at the Cherries, though Zemura has remained Scott Parker’s first choice.

Given Leeds’ shortage of left backs, Davis could’ve been a useful asset this season, particularly given the poor form of Junior Firpo. Having said that, the fact Leeds allowed an option to buy to be included in the deal last summer means his future at Elland Road is probably over.

Alfie McCalmont – Morecambe

With Morecambe’s form having taken a real nosedive in the last two months, Alfie McCalmont has found himself in and out of the starting XI recently. The 22-year-old has made 18 starts this season, though just three of those have come in the last 14 matches.

Given that he hasn’t quite had the impact he would’ve wanted at the Shrimps, either another Football League loan, or a permanent parting of ways feels like the most likely scenario at this stage.

Ryan Edmondson – Fleetwood Town/Port Vale

After struggling for regular game time at League One side Fleetwood Town, Ryan Edmondson saw his loan spell cut short there in favour of a temporary switch to Port Vale. Edmondson has enjoyed a far more positive impact at Vale Park, netting three goals in seven starts as they continue their push for promotion.

His earlier season struggles, though, suggest that Edmondson may have found his level in League Two, and he certainly has all the physical attributes needed to be a success there.

Mateusz Bogusz – UD Ibiza

Young Polish midfielder Mateusz Bogusz was enjoying a strong season at UD Ibiza until an ACL injury cut his season short in early January. Bogusz netted four goals and provided seven assists in 20 matches for the Spanish Second Division side.

The nature of this injury, though, is likely to set him back a sustained period of time. However, when he returns, perhaps a loan to the Championship would be a better indicator as to whether he has what it takes to make it at Leeds.

Laurens de Bock – Zulte Waregem

Laurens de Bock has not made an appearance for Leeds since March 2018, which is a pretty clear tell tale that his future lays elsewhere regardless of how he is performing at Zulte Waregem.

De Bock has been a regular for the Belgian side and has even earned the club’s captaincy this season. His contract at Elland Road is up in the summer and there is little to no chance that it will be renewed.

Kun Temenuzhkov – Real Union

Another of the loan contingent who has hardly set the world alight this season is Kun Temenuzhkov. Kun has netted just three times in 20 appearances for Real Union over the course of the campaign, meaning it is very unlikely that the 22-year-old has a long-term future at Leeds, despite the high hopes the club had for him when he first arrived from Barcelona.

Elia Caprile – Pro Patria

Prior to joining Pro Patria on a season long loan last summer, Elia Caprile penned a three-year contract extension at Leeds, suggesting they still have high hopes for him. Caprile has started 32 matches for the Serie C – A side this season, though given the level of football he is playing at, another temporary switch away next term seems the most likely scenario at this stage.

‘Ready to play’ – Leeds share major injury update on six players ahead of clash v Southampton

Leeds United are expected to welcome six first-team regulars back into contention for their Premier League game against Southampton next weekend.

The Whites suffered an unprecedented four injuries during the game in the win over Wolves, while some other stars had been absent already with fitness issues.

But after news that Patrick Bamford will be absent for at least six weeks with the re-emergence of plantar fascitis in his foot, the club have shared an update on the rest of their squad via BBC Radio Leeds journalist Adam Pope on Twitter.

Ilan Meslier went off injured with a hip problem against Wolves, but he is now expected to be fit to play in the next game. Diego Llorente (back spasm) and Mateusz Klich (concussion) also went off, but will be “ready to play” after treatment during the international break.

Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips were named on the bench for that game but weren’t able to get on due to the injury issues, but both are expected to feature in some capacity. Raphinha has recovered from COVID-19 and should play too.

Huge boost

Leeds greatly helped themselves when it came to their battle against relegation by winning back-to-back games with late winners against Norwich and Wolves.

They now sit seven points above the relegation zone with eight games remaining, although the teams below them do have games in hand.

But being able to welcome back so many key players into the squad at the same time is a huge boost for them and will undoubtedly provide manager Jesse Marsch with a positive kind of headache.

He now has decisions to make about his team and the answers will have a big effect on the upcoming results and whether or not they can keep their good momentum going.

For the first time in a while, Leeds are at near full strength and they couldn’t have asked for that to happen at a better time of the season.
