Victor Orta reveals Raphinha’s first wish following 2020 Leeds United signing as exit talk intensifies

Victor Orta has stated that Raphinha mentioned his goals of the Qatar World Cup when he first joined Leeds United back in 2020.

The Whites are fighting to stay in the Premier League this season, with Raphinha’s nine goals so far a huge help as they sit seven points clear of the drop.

It has seen talk of an exit build since January, with fans feeling like it’s inevitable that a move is on the cards for the winger.

Raphinha is in his second Premier League season after sealing a bargain GBP17million move from Rennes back on deadline day in summer 2020.

His form since then has shown just how good a deal Leeds got, with the winger now going on to becoming a key figure in the Brazil side as they prepare for the World Cup in Qatar.

He might not be flying the Leeds flag for Brazil in Qatar, with Barcelona’s interest growing seemingly by the day in him, but his development at Elland Road is what has seen him earn his spot in Tite’s squad.

GBP40-50million

GBP50-60million

More than GBP60million

Now, Victor Orta has revealed that this was an overall aim for Raphinha when he joined Leeds, as he had this to say to Marca on his arrival:

“On August 29, I received a call that Rennes puts Raphinha on sale. At 9 in the morning, I was in the barbershop I remember perfectly and at 11 they had an offer of 15 million that we went up to 17.

“The 30th plays, scores, takes a private flight and the 31st signs at Leeds. They signed Doku, the Belgian boy. The player walked through the door of Leeds United and said, ‘You will invite me to the World Cup in Qatar, won’t you?’, and he was left with a foolish face, he didn’t believe it.

“And now we have been meeting those objectives. Now he knows that Leeds and his coaching staff, who have collaborated a lot, have helped his figure grow and has responded to us with a lot of quality and being a differential player in the league.

“He has to remain the same and then when summer arrives, when the time comes, there will be time for everything.”

Mission accomplished.

It was quite clear from Raphinha’s first touches in a Leeds shirt that he was destined for the very top.

He’s been outstanding since he signed and despite a dip in form in 2022, he’s still no doubt a top class winger.

If he keeps us in the Premier League this season, then I don’t think anyone will begrudge him a move to Barcelona in the summer.

He’s been a tremendous servant to us, and his own hard work has earned him that spot in the Brazil squad, and I look forward to seeing him in the World Cup.
