West Yorkshire Police have cordoned off the area near Great Wilson Street after reports a grenade was found in the water

Police have announced a report had been received of a grenade in the water near Leeds city centre.
West Yorkshire Police tweeted this afternoon, April 26, that the area near Great Wilson Street, next to the River Aire, had been cordoned off after a report of a grenade being found in the water. A worker at the Asda House nearby told LeedsLive the building had been evacuated and the bomb squad had been called in.

Magnet fishers appear to have uncovered the suspected grenade
As mentioned above, it is believed that magnet fishers accidentally uncovered the explosive device while searching for the David Oluwale plaque that officials believe may have been thrown into the river. This appears to have been corroborated on social media by more than one user.

Residents and workers nearby shared their thoughts on the situation
One man who works in a restaurant by the river said they were told they were fine to open but said he didn’t know much else about the situation.
A security guard also revealed that police have taken the suspected grenade and gone to blow it out somewhere else as a precaution.
A lady also told our reporter at the scene, that she believed it was magnet fishers that had uncovered the device and said they were looking for the David Oluwale plaque when they discovered the suspected grenade.
It was also confirmed that only Asda house was evacuated, and no other buildings were affected.

Asda House employee says ‘building evacuated and bomb squad called’
The husband of a woman who works in Asda House told LeedsLive:
They have evacuated the building and the bomb squad are there. There is a suspicious package on a boat in the river.
They have just had to get out of the building and leave everything behind. They are not allowed back in there.
