Leeds United made the right decision in sacking Marcelo Bielsa when they did.
That’s according to former Chelsea midfielder Jason Cundy, who is now confident that the club will avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.
Leeds were 16th in the Premier League table, two points clear of 18th placed Burnley, but had played two games more, when Bielsa was sacked in the wake of a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at the end of February.
That came after a run of just one point in six games, with Jesse Marsch having now seen quite a turnaround since taking over.
Despite losing his first two games in charge, Monday night’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace means Leeds are now unbeaten in their last five outings, and sit five points clear of Everton – who have one game in hand – in 18th.
Now it seems as though the position that Leeds currently find themselves in, means Cundy believes they have been vindicated with that decision to change manager, and that they have enough to stay in the top-flight.
Speaking about Leeds’ position after that stalemate at Selhurst Park, the former England Under 21 international told TalkSport: “They were heading down under Bielsa, I think the time was right for them to make that decision.
“It’s a brave decision because of how much he was loved there but it was the right call – sometimes you’ve got to make tough decisions like that.
“Jesse Marsch has come in – he lost his first two but he’s turned things around, he’s getting a tune out of them. I think they’ll be alright.”
It does appear as though this change in manager has paid off for Leeds.
Admittedly, there is still work to be done to secure safety, and with Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea to come next, that is still not going to be easy for Marsch’s side.
However, looking at the change in performance since that managerial alteration, it is hard not to feel as though Leeds would have struggled to pick up quite so many points from these games under Bielsa.
As a result, though it was certainly a difficult call for the club to make, and for fans to take, you do feel as though it may have been the right one.
