Kalvin Phillips must start for Leeds United when they travel to Vicarage Road to face Watford on Saturday.
That’s according to the club’s former goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who says that now is the right time for the England international to return to the starting lineup.
Leeds were handed two major injury boosts in their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday, with the return of both Phillips and Liam Cooper from injury.
Both players had been out since early December with hamstring problems, but are now back in contention for selection.
Cooper completed the full 90 minutes of that match, while Phillips came off the bench with around 25 minutes remaining of the second half.
Now though, with Leeds facing another big game at the weekend against a side battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League in Watford, Robinson believes Phillips needs to start as well.
Speaking about whether Phillips should start against Roy Hodgson’s side, the ex-England international told MOT Leeds News: “It’s his time to play now. I mean, Liam Cooper came in and did extremely well and I think it’s time for Kalvin to come back in as well.
“They’ve missed him for so long and he was successful off the bench at the weekend, which is all they could have hoped for really. They’ve got to look at starting him now. He’s got to start.”
You do feel as though Robinson is right with his assessment here.
This is a huge game for Leeds on Saturday, where victory would take them another big step closer to securing their Premier League status for next season.
As a result, it seems as though they must have their strongest side possible out for this one, and given how they have missed him recently, there can be no doubting that Phillips is part of that.
Indeed, with Cooper having come through the full 90 minutes last weekend unscathed, there ought to be some confidence that trying to get Phillips to do the same here, could be a risk worth taking.
