Paul Robinson isn’t surprised to see Ryan Edmondson leaving Leeds United after it was confirmed on Thursday morning that he’s joined Carlisle on a permanent basis.
The League Two club announced via their official Twitter account on 23 June that Edmondson, 21, has signed a two-year deal at Brunton Park.
Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth reported ahead of the deal’s completion (22 June) that while Leeds are releasing Edmondson to join Carlisle on a free transfer, the deal includes a sell-on clause that could benefit the Yorkshire club in the future.
“He’s been nowhere near the first-team, he’s been out on loan and he’s been in and out of the squad but never actually broke through and made a real fist of it,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“For all parties, it’s probably best.
“It’s good they’ve got the sell-on clause just in case.
“I don’t know if they saw a lot of potential in him but he hasn’t reached it at Leeds.
“But if he does go on to reach it and Carlisle sell him, Leeds have got the sell-on clause.
“I think with where Leeds are going now, they need to be signing top-level players so Edmondson’s opportunities were going to be very limited.”
Edmondson made just two senior appearances for Leeds.
Both came in 2018 when he played against QPR and Birmingham in the Championship.
He’s since been on loan at Aberdeen, Fleetwood, Northampton and, most recently, Port Vale, where he scored three goals in 21 total appearances.
