West Ham are reportedly not prepared to pay the £17.5million it will take to sign Leeds United target and Burnley attacker Maxwel Cornet.
According to the Chronicle (August 3, page 45), reports were cited that claimed that the Hammers opted against activating his release clause of £17.5million.
Leeds, who have shown an interest in him, would surely be able to afford that transfer fee having sold Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips for big money.
The Whites need a striker and a left-back this summer and in Cornet, they will get someone who can play both roles comfortably.
Before his move to Burnley, he was often deployed as a left-back in France and he would be a terrific addition to the Leeds backline.
Junior Firpo struggled a great deal in his first Premier League campaign while the Ivory Coast international seemed to hit the ground running in England.
He also played as a central striker and we can understand the intrigue behind wanting to sign him and believe that Jesse Marsch can bring the best out of him.
With West Ham out of the race, Leeds are now not competing against any team that can offer him European football and that’s always a boost.
Everton and Newcastle were said to be interested but Leeds can definitely fancy themselves to get this deal over the line if they actually table a bid that triggers his release clause.
In other Leeds United news, a 29-year-old has snubbed interest from Europe to move to Elland Road with the move subject to a work permit.
