Jesse Marsch makes clear Leeds United relegation claim after Watford win

Leeds United are still in a Premier League relegation fight right now, despite their win over Watford on Saturday.

That’s according to manager Jesse Marsch, who says that he expects the gap between his side and the bottom three to have narrowed by the time his side play again, against Crystal Palace on the 25th April.

Leeds picked up a big win in their battle to avoid relegation on Saturday afternoon, with goals from Raphinha, Rodrigo and Jack Harrison securing a 3-0 win over fellow strugglers Watford.

That results means that Marsch’s side have now moved nine points clear of the bottom three, having picked up three wins and a draw from their last four games.

However, it is worth noting that Burnley, who currently occupy 18th in the table, do have three games in hand on Leeds, starting with a trip to bottom club Norwich on Sunday.

As a result, it seems Marsch is taking nothing for granted when it comes to the challenge of keeping his team in the top-flight for next season, with plenty of time for things to change.

Asked whether his side were still in a relegation battle after that win at Vicarage Road, Marsch told Leeds Live: “Yeah, yeah. Everyone’s getting results around us. I think there’s been some weak penalties in some of these games and we can’t seem to buy a penalty.

That’s another topic, people in Leeds tell me we have to fight for everything and I’ve said already that I’m okay with that, but I think especially with the 16-day break now, it would have been really difficult to sit and watch the table knowing that we didn’t pick up the points that we wanted in this game and things are going to get tight.

By the time we play against Palace, the table will be tight again. We just have to stay focused on us, I’ve said that a million times now.

But that’s the most important thing, it’s got us to where we are right now, this concept and mentality of just working every day and trying to improve and trying to give everything we have to each other. That has gotten us to where are now and we need to continue with that.”

This does feel like it is a rather fair assessment of the situation from Marsch.

If Burnley were to win all three of their games in hand on Leeds, it would put the two sides level on points in the standings, and then the pressure would be right back on the Elland Road club.

As a result, it is right for Marsch not to be taking anything for granted here, and that means his side should remain fully focused in the final few weeks of the campaign.

Indeed, with the results they have been picking up recently, you do get the feeling that Leeds do have a good chance of getting themselves over the line, if they approach things in the right way.
