Leeds United’s Brenden Aaronson earns praise for latest USA performance

Brenden Aaronson celebrated signing for Leeds United with a goal and an excellent performance for the USA in their 3-0 victory over Morocco on Thursday. The 21-year-old had jetted out for international duty immediately after signing his contract at Elland Road last week.

The new Leeds star came in for high praise from US fans and pundits alike after his performance as a number eight for the national team. Previously, he had primarily played on the left wing for Greg Berhalter’s team, but injuries to some of the usual options saw him come into the centre of the pitch, which is where the player – and Leeds – see him playing his best football.

ESPN pundit, Herculez Gomez was particularly effusive, praising Aaronson for the ‘duality’ of his game. He told ESPN FC:

“His stock is going up. I don’t care where this kid is playing, he shows you how dangerous he can be. How composed he is on the ball, how creative he is but also, as an eight, he showed this: the bite, the grit, the duality to his game.

“The motor that he has is insane. How he joined Christian Pulisic for that attack [when Aaronson scored] was like a 45-yard-run. This is a player – and I love this the most about him – he will make that run into the attack but he will also make the effort to win the ball. In transition, he’s very good but I do see him playing centrally, especially if Giovani Reyna is not healthy.”

Gomez was asked whether Aaronson would cope with the physicality of playing centrally, as his slight build make him a player who can be knocked aside in physical duels. He affirmed his belief that Aaronson would be successful playing in the centre as he said, “I would encourage you to go back and watch that game against Bayern Munich [the first-leg of the Champions League knock-out tie], where I thought he was extremely good both sides of the ball.”
