View: Leeds United upgrading 25-year-old shouldn’t be a “priority” at this moment in time

Junior Firpo was one half of Leeds United’s marquee summer business in 2021 and, it’s fair to say, he’s maybe not lived up to the expectation following his arrival from Barcelona.

Leeds spent a reported ?13m on Firpo, who made 24 appearances in the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch. He contributed two assists as well as 11 yellow cards in a campaign disrupted by suspension and injury.

As we mentioned, he hardly convinced and there are certain sections of Leeds’ fanbase that want to see Marsch recruit a new left-back this summer.

Our writers Kris (FA5) and Alfie (N12) discuss whether they’d consider upgrading the 25-year-old:

We’ve seen instances where Firpo has looked like a real player for us, particularly Burnley and Brighton at home.

That said, I still don’t have much confidence that he can consistently produce performances to prove he’s been a decent signing.

Signing a left-back is not a priority for us right now, but I wouldn’t mind us looking into that position for another option.

Whether there’s a younger option we could look for or a cut-price experienced signing to add competition, it’s definitely worth us exploring.

I think many Leeds fans would not be happy if we went into next season knowing Firpo is our only real choice.

Quiz: Are these 15 statements about Leeds United’s Junior Firpo true or false?

Junior Firpo started his senior career at Barcelona.

You can fully understand the clamour for Leeds to upgrade Firpo and, looking at things with balance, there’s a risk in entering the new season with him as the only left-back option in Stuart Dallas’ absence.

However, I’d like to see Leeds show a touch of faith in Firpo at least up until January. He had some good games towards the end of the season and if he can build on that heading into 2022/23, he might yet come good.

You’d imagine that the club will give him that chance after such a heavy outlay.

The question, then, is whether or not Leeds bring him in some competition. They’ve got Leif Davis returning from Bournemouth, whilst Pascal Struijk can step out there in a four-man defence.

Another option I’d consider is Jack Harrison, if Leeds are to play with a wing-back system on occasions as they did under Marsch. He’d be perfect getting up and down the flank.

Ultimately, for me, the question is whether Leeds feel they have enough depth behind Firpo rather than upgrading him.

Do Leeds need to upgrade Firpo?
