A Leeds mum has spoken out about her devastation after her teenage son took his own life while studying for his GCSEs.
One morning in February 2017, 15-year-old Daniel Long had come home from a friend’s house and told his mum Emma Oliver he was going upstairs to do some exam revision. Emma heard a bang from downstairs. Tragically, she went to check on Daniel to find he’d taken his own life.
Daniel’s suicide devastated Emma, now 48, and her family. She’s spent the years since trying to rebuild and honour Daniel, while taking action to help other teenagers struggling with their mental health.
Emma, who lives in Gildersome near Morley, told LeedsLive: “It was a Sunday morning and Daniel had come in about half past eight because he’d been out the night before with friends. He sat on the settee and he said ‘I’m going to do some revision today’. I said ‘that’s fine but you need to take breaks’. He sat on the settee, he had some Coco Pops and went upstairs for a bath. He put his dressing gown on and was up and down the stairs.
“I was making Sunday dinner and he came in. I touched his head and said ‘are you alright?’ and he said ‘yeah’, and I told him I’d be up in a minute with a drink for him while I was cooking. He went upstairs. About 20 minutes later I heard a bang. I thought ‘bloody hell what’s that?’ and then when I went to the stairs to check and Daniel had hanged himself.
“I knew he’d been finding exams stressful but I never realised how stressful. He was a good kid.”
Emma performed CPR to recover his heart rate and called emergency services immediately, and Daniel was placed in an induced coma at <a href="https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/all-about/leeds-general-infirmary" rel="Follow" target="_self" data-link-tracking="InArticle
