Graham Smyth provides confident answer to burning Leeds United & Kalvin Phillips question

Leeds United are confident of signing Kalvin Phillips to a new contract before the end of the season, aiming to ward off potential interest in his signature.

After two wins on the bounce in the Premier League, Jesse Marsch’s Leeds are looking much more likely to avoid the drop back to the Championship this season.

With that secured top-flight status will come a better chance for the Whites to keep hold of some of their prized assets in the summer months.

Kalvin Phillips’ future is up for debate at the moment with reports claiming that Aston Villa are looking into a GBP60million bid to sign the midfielder this summer.

Having come through the academy and transformed into a hero at the club, Leeds would obviously prefer that he stays put for the foreseeable.

More than GBP60m

However, that would only be possible if the club shows they can match the ambition of these sides vying for his signature.

The question was put to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth in a Q&A on whether Phillips would sign this contract on the table for him, and thus if he would stay in the summer.

He answered:

“Yes. He wants one, Leeds are obviously determined to keep him on board this summer and it just makes sense to get it done.”

We need to get him tied down to a new contract, not only to deter any bidders for him but also to show him how much he is actually worth to the club.

I don’t think that a new contract totally rules out an exit for Phillips, but if he does sign one, it means that any buyer trying to sign him will have to spend an awful lot to make it happen.

He clearly wants to stay at the club, but we need to be going places in the same way he is because he’s already worthy of a move to a Champions League club.

We can’t keep holding him back without any signs of progress in the coming seasons, otherwise, he’s well within his rights to leave.
