‘Inconsistency’ – Dean Smith hits out at flashpoint in Leeds United 2-1 Norwich City

Norwich City boss Dean Smith has hit out at VAR following Leeds United’s 2-1 win over the Canaries yesterday afternoon.

Leeds took the lead through Rodrigo, but Kenny McClean looked to have snatched Norwich a point with a 91st minute goal after a period of knocking on the door.

Joe Gelhardt, though, won the points in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the second-half, sending Elland Road into chaos.

A dramatic 90 minutes had more than just three goals to it, with plenty of key decisions to discuss.

Included in that was VAR overturning a Norwich penalty in the second-half after a coming together between Luke Ayling and Milot Rashica.

The officials awarded an on-field penalty, before VAR ruled the Norwich winger had stood on the Leeds captain rather than being fouled.

For Dean Smith, though, he was far from convinced (as per the Yorkshire Evening Post) that it was the right decision.

“As soon as the referee goes over to the screen you know it’s getting overturned. He’s probably been told to overturn it.

“Is it a clear and obvious error? I don’t know because that changes from game to game and week to week. It’s a real tough one but Luke Ayling slides in and makes no contact but stops Rashica getting a shot away. The fact that Milo ends up standing on Luke Ayling means he goes down. What’s he meant to do? If Luke Ayling’s foot’s not there he puts his foot down and shoots. I don’t know what he’s meant to do.

“Clear and obvious? You’d have to ask Mike Riley and his gang.

“There’s so much inconsistency nobody knows. We wanted VAR but for me it shouldn’t be involved in subjective matters. Leave it to on-field referees.”

Yes

No

Emotions were running high at Elland Road yesterday as Gelhardt smashed home the winning goal, but the same can be said of Norwich and Smith, who are in real trouble when it comes to relegation.

The penalty decision proved to be the right one and felt like the correct use of VAR.

In real time, it looked like Ayling had lunged and brought Rashica down. On the replay, though, it was quite clear that it was more a case of the Norwich player standing on Ayling.

If Smith takes a step away from the emotion involved, he will see that and be acceptant of the fact that the technology was used in the correct way.

That’s not always the case and he makes plenty of good points on VAR. However, with the technology not going anywhere fast, you’ve got to accept that it is going to be used.
