Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has claimed that goalkeeper Illan Meslier is one of the best young players he has seen in the position.
The Whites are blessed with a host of extremely talented young players making their way into important first-team roles this season.
No one more so than 22-year-old goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who continues to be a vital part of Leeds’ bid to stay in the Premier League, after three wins in the last four games.
Prior to Leeds’ clean sheet and 3-0 win over Watford, Jesse Marsch had this to say on the stopper during his pre-match press conference:
“First of all I think Illan’s talent is massive.
“He is a young goalkeeper that is as good as any young goalkeeper I have ever seen. That’s really exciting. Then he has a really good mentality, he wants to work, he wants to learn and he wants to improve.”
Here, we take a look at two things Leeds need to weigh up as Marsch makes a big claim about Meslier’s talents…
No pressure, Illan
While we’re sure that most Leeds fans will agree that Meslier’s potential is enormous and we’re certain he’ll go onto big things, it’s a bold claim to make.
He’s been performing so well this season and he’s worthy of the immense praise he’s getting here, but we need to not pile the pressure on him too much.
Marsch has outlined here how brilliant he is, and it’s a benchmark that we’ve set for him that he needs to perform at each week.
The expectation to bring results for Leeds United is probably already a big enough weight on his shoulders, without needing to live up to his own hype.
Yes
No
How important is he to us?
With a statement of intent like this, should come a review over how key he actually is.
It’s quite obvious Meslier has been vital to us and losing him to injury would be a devastating blow.
Not only that, but his talents are obviously being appreciated by clubs across Europe – namely PSG.
Marsch’s estimation of the talent in Meslier’s possession should surely double as a ‘hands off’ message to top clubs around the world vying for him as a long-term signing.
His performances have been worth the difference between promotion and relegation to us, and it’s good to see that the boss has already outlined this publicly after one moment of unjustified scrutiny.
A new deal is unlikely after penning one last summer, but reaffirming how he’s valued is a great sign.
