It seems that Manchester United are unlikely to sign winger Raphinha from Leeds United in the summer.
That’s after Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst claimed the Red Devils will not move for a second Leeds player, if they complete the signing of Kalvin Phillips.
Amid Leeds’ battle to stay in the Premier League this season, the futures of Raphinha and Phillips have both been the subject of much speculation.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Manchester United are one the clubs who are working on a deal to sign Phillips once the transfer market opens this summer.
Whether that deal is one they can pull off remains to be seen, given it has been reported that Phillips is keen to sign a new contract at Elland Road.
Now though, it seems that one thing that is certain, is that Raphinha will not be following Phillips to Old Trafford in the upcoming window.
Responding to a question in an MEN QandA about whether Manchester United could attempt to sign Raphinha as well as Phillips this summer, Luckhurst wrote: “I suspect if they follow through with their interest in and work on Phillips then they won’t pilfer any more players from Leeds.”
This may be something of a relief for Leeds.
Admittedly, even if Manchester United do not make a move for Raphinha, he is still likely to be the subject of some significant interest in the summer, and it may well be hard to keep him.
However, this does at least mean they would not be losing two players – if any – to one of their closest rivals.
That is something that would have been particularly frustrating for Leeds fans, given it could have come back to bite them on the pitch, so there are certainly positives to be taken from this update.
