The summer transfer window has already been a busy one for Leeds United, with a number of eye-catching new signings arriving at Elland Road.
Meanwhile, some big names have also left the club, but it is not just transfer business that is being deal with right now, with contract business also on the agenda.
One player who the club are seemingly in discussions with over a new deal is young striker Joe Gelhardt, who has already scored two goals and provided two assists in 20 Premier League outings for the club.
A new contract for Gelhardt could certainly prove to be a major coup for the club, so we’ve taken a look at what we know about the possibility of a new deal with Leeds for the 20-year-old, right here.
What’s the latest?
Speaking last month, The Athletic’s Phil Hay had suggested that a new contract for Gelhardt is something the club could look to secure before the start of next season.
Now it seems as though Leeds are well on their way to doing just that, with recent reports from Football Insider now claiming that the Elland Road outfit are in advanced talks over a new deal.
It is suggested that the striker will not only have his deal extended by the club, but also be handed a large pay rise as a reward for his emergence as a first-team player.
Are Leeds well placed to tie him down?
It does look as though the club are in a strong position as they look to secure this deal for the striker.
Given Gelhardt knows he will get game time in the Premier League, and a significant boost to his financial situation, extending his stay at Elland Road should be appealing to him.
It is also worth noting that with two years remaining on his current deal, there is plenty of time for Leeds to negotiate an agreement with him without the pressure of losing him on the cheap, meaning they do look well placed to get a deal over the line.
Is there a chance he doesn’t sign?
Anybody who follows football will be aware of the fact that no deal is 100% done, until there is a picture on the club website of a player holding a scarf over his head.
However, it does look unlikely right now that Gelhardt would not put pen to paper on a new deal at Elland Road in the circumstances.
Indeed, there have been no reports of interest from elsewhere in him yet, meaning it would be a surprise if he has had his turned in a way that convinces him not to sign.
With all that in mind, you do get the feeling that a new contract to keep Gelhardt at Leeds could be signed sooner rather than later.
Would Leeds be right to give Gelhardt a new deal?
Yes
No
